VALENTINE, Neb. -- From western music to cowboy poetry, Old West Days draws country fans from across the region to Valentine.

“In the session this morning, there was a person from North Dakota, me from Oklahoma, and a lady from Utah,” Scott Taylor said.

Taylor has been traveling across the country singing western music for around 35 years.

“It’s a form of folk art, folk music, and folk poetry,” Taylor said. “It will usually talk about some experience in life that we’ve all had.”

Rick Buoy also shares his life experiences through cowboy poetry.

“The cowboy culture, as I say, be good to your women, be good to your horses,” Buoy said.

In addition to performances, the event also hosts writer’s workshops, along with free poetry, and music sessions.

“Most of the people who come to these are 70 to 80 years old,” Buoy said.

But these performers said there’s a high value in learning and writing about the cowboy way of life.

“We need to pass it on,” Buoy said. "People need to know what happens in our day and things that happen in our life."

“The basic intent of stories and tales that describe life is what it’s all about,” Taylor said.
