SIDNEY, Neb. – Since its establishment in 2022, the Sidney And Greater Area (SAGA) Fund has been making waves in Sidney and surrounding communities by enhancing the quality of life and fostering sustainable growth. With the backing of the Nebraska Community Foundation, the fund operates as a beacon of hope and generosity, channeling resources into philanthropic and charitable causes.

To date, SAGA has distributed $57,250 to various initiatives, ranging from environmental cleanup and education to emergency services and recreational projects. Among the beneficiaries are Keep Sidney Beautiful, which received $13,000 for Interstate 80 corridor cleanup; the Potter Fire & Rescue Department, awarded $5,000 for new equipment; Kid’s Korner in Sidney, which secured $5,000 to expand its childcare center; The Oktoberfest Committee earned $4,000 for their 50th celebration; the Dalton Fire Department received $5,000 to assist in replacing overhead doors; and $5,000 was given to the Sidney Public Library to help reach their goal of purchasing a new book mobile.

The 11-person SAGA Fund Advisory Committee, composed of local volunteers, ensures donations are effectively allocated to meet community needs. Volunteer committee members are Megan Price, Laura Narjes, Clint Norman, Erika Revord, Keith Nienhueser, Ally Benzel, Liz Borgmann, Hunter Arterburn, Dave McCarville, John Weiser and Melissa Norgard.

The SAGA Fund’s mission is further supported by a challenge grant from the Sidney Donor Advised Fund. Having raised over $200,000 toward the goal of $250,000 from 200 donors, SAGA is working to secure seven planned gifts by the end of 2025. Achieving this milestone would unlock an additional $1 million for the fund’s unrestricted endowment, expanding it to $1.25 million.

The challenge grant represents a transformative opportunity for area communities. Every dollar and planned gift moves goes towards ensuring a brighter, sustainable future for Cheyenne County.

Organizations looking to benefit from SAGA’s efforts can apply for funding twice a year, with deadlines on April 1 and October 1. The application process is designed to be straightforward, with awards reviewed by the Nebraska Community Foundation to ensure impactful allocations.

For individuals and businesses eager to contribute, donations can be made online at sagafund.org or mailed to the SAGA Fund at PO Box 588, Sidney, NE 69162. Contributions are tax-deductible and selecting the “Unrestricted Endowment” option ensures eligibility for the challenge grant match.
