Sterling crews respond to vehicle fire
Sterling firefighters put out a vehicle fire early Friday near CR 26 and Edith Avenue. Crews are reminding the public of the dangers of exploding gas struts after one launched during the blaze.
STERLING, Colo. – Firefighters in Sterling extinguished a vehicle fire early Saturday and are reminding the public of the dangers associated with gas struts in cars.
According to the Sterling Fire Department, crews were dispatched around 1 a.m. Aug. 23 to the area of County Road 26 and Edith Avenue for a vehicle on fire. Units from Station 1, Engine 12 and Medic 3 arrived to find the vehicle fully involved. Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control and completed mop-up operations.
During the response, one of the gas struts on the vehicle’s rear hatch exploded due to the fire, becoming a projectile. Fire officials said it lodged itself between the roof and hatch, underscoring the risks responders face when dealing with vehicle fires.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.
