BIG SPRINGS, Neb. — A head-on collision shut down westbound Interstate 80 near Big Springs late Sunday afternoon, sending three people to hospitals with injuries.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation reported the interstate closure at 5:45 p.m. between mile marker 108 and the Big Springs link. Traffic was also blocked between mile marker 105 and Exit 102.

Nebraska State Patrol spokesperson Cody Thomas said a Ford pickup traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes collided with a Chevrolet pickup. Both occupants of the Chevrolet were taken to Sedgwick County Hospital, while the driver of the Ford was flown to Greeley, Colorado, with serious injuries. Identities and conditions have not been released.

An eyewitness told News Channel Nebraska she was driving west in the right lane when another motorist flashed headlights from the opposite direction to warn of danger. She slowed down as a white pickup moved to pass her in the left lane, colliding head-on with the wrong-way vehicle.

“The vehicles just came apart with debris, and the collision was so loud,” the witness said. She avoided the wreck with only minor scratches to her own vehicle. “I couldn’t stop thinking about those involved.”

The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating.
