SIDNEY -- Richard Lee Martinez and Akicita Fast Horse appeared in Cheyenne County District Court this week.

Martinez appeared in Court October 1. The Court reviewed his bond of $100,000 and ruled to continue his bond as set.

Richard Lee Martinez and Edgar Bear Runner III, both of Pine Ridge, S.D., and Akicita Fast Horse of Wounded Knee, S.D., were arrested in May following a high-speed pursuit by law enforcement. Bear Runner is scheduled for pretrial on October 14.

Fast Horse appeared before the Hon. Judge Derek Weimer Tuesday for sentencing. In his statement before sentencing, Fast Horse said he learned his lesson and recognizes he was spending time with the wrong friends.

In May, Fast Horse was treated for injuries from a rollover accident resulting from the pursuit, then arrested on three counts of possession of a stolen firearm and one count of tampering with evidence. He later pleaded guilty to two counts of possession of a stolen firearm.

Before sentencing, he told Judge Weimer he learned his lesson and knows he was spending time with the wrong people.

Judge Weimer said Fast Horse was the least culpable in the incident, but still responsible for his actions, including throwing a package of stolen firearms out of the vehicle.

"I'll remind you you're darn lucky you weren't found dead in the field," Judge Weimer said.

Fast Horse was ejected the pickup truck pursued by law enforcement rolled in a field.

Fast Horse was sentenced to the Nebraska Department of Corrections, not less than one year and not more than three years with consideration of time served.
