Crews quickly extinguish semi fire hauling cattle near Sterling
Highway 6 near Sterling was temporarily closed Wednesday after a semi hauling cattle caught fire. Crews quickly put out the flames and safely moved the cattle into a nearby pasture. No injuries were reported, according to the Sterling Fire Department.
By News Channel NebraskaSTERLING, Colo. - Highway 6 was temporarily closed Wednesday afternoon after a semi hauling cattle caught fire east of Sterling.
According to the Sterling Fire Department, crews were dispatched at 1:43 p.m. to mile marker 412 on East Highway 6 after reports of a semi-truck fire. When first responders arrived, they found the tractor fully engulfed in flames.
Deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office and troopers with the Colorado State Patrol immediately shut down the highway as firefighters worked to unload cattle from the trailer to keep them safe from the flames. Crews cut the fence on the south side of the road and moved the animals into a nearby pasture.
Firefighters deployed attack lines and were able to quickly extinguish the fire. No injuries were reported.
Responding agencies included Sterling Fire Department, the Logan County Sheriff’s Office, Colorado State Patrol and the Colorado Department of Transportation.
The fire department also thanked Sterling Livestock Commission Company for their assistance at the scene, noting their quick response was especially appreciated on sale day.
