Children walk for help after Holt County crash; Minnesota man, 5-year-old die

EWING, Neb. — A Minnesota man and a child have died following a one-vehicle accident in rural Holt County.
The Holt County Sheriff’s Office says it received a call about the accident at 9:18 Friday night. According to a news release, the crash happened on a curved section of 508 Ave. about 2.5 miles south of Ewing. Investigators believe a 34-year-old man was driving a pickup northbound when he lost control on an icy curve, causing the truck to leave the road and land on its top in a pond. The driver was trapped in the truck and died at the scene.
The release says four children, who were siblings from Minnesota, escaped the vehicle and went looking for help. One of them, a five-year-old boy, wasn’t able to keep going and the other three continued without him. They found another driver one mile north of the accident scene and asked for help. According to the sheriff’s office, the other driver called police and assisted in finding the accident scene.
Ewing Fire and Rescue requested help from other agencies to search for the five-year-old boy. Volunteers walked the ground and used ATVs and authorities searched using multiple drones with thermal imaging to try to find the boy. After hours of searching, the release says they found him dead several hundred yards from the road.
Authorities say the other three children were transported to an O’Neill hospital but didn’t suffer any serious injuries.
The situation is still under investigation. The Sheriff’s Office did not release the man’s name or specify if he was related to the children.
