Cougar notes: WNCC women top Lamar by 20 to stay undefeated in conference play

SCOTTSBLUFF - The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team put four players in double figures in earning a 79-59 win over Lamar Community College Wednesday evening at Cougar Palace.
The big key in the win that pushed the Cougars to 2-0 in the South Sub-Region was a big first quarter and then then a second half where the Cougars hit plenty of shots just before the shot clock buzzer went off.
WNCC head coach Ryan Davis said his team played well and they hit shots when they needed.
“We did (hit shots just before the shot clock buzzer) and that’s probably not typical of a normal game, but I think our awareness at the end of the shot clock was really important,” he said. “We got a shot a lot of times and we have people that are just playmakers and so we had the ball in the playmaker’s hands. They were able to kind of read the shot clock in the situation and then able to get a shot off.”
Another big key in the win was scoring 20 points in a quarter. The Cougars did that in three of the four quarters and those were the quarters they won. The second quarter was the only one they didn’t score 20 points and Lamar outscored them in that quarter 18-11.
“Strong first quarter, strong fourth quarter and we only lost one of the quarters,” Davis said. “So, we went 22-11 in the first and 21-8 in the fourth quarter and what I saw at the end, especially with about four minutes left is I kind of felt Lamar felt things slipping away and I was really proud of our girls because there were some times there at the beginning of the second half that we could have let that slip away and they just did a great job of being solid and then took off at the end.”
It was a big team win for the Cougars as well with four players getting in double figures and different people stepping up at different times in different situations. WNCC was led in scoring by Ella Chesta Carty with 17 points while also pulling down nine rebounds.
Veralyn Aviles chipped in 16 points with six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Charisma Johnson tallied 14 points with 12 coming in the first half, while Zozefine Sipolina getting 13 points with three triples.
WNCC shot 46 percent from the field and made nine 3-pointers. The Cougars also missed just one free throw (8-of-9). Lamar shot 39 percent and made just three 3-pointers while making 8-of-13 from the charity strip.
The first quarter was a big reason for the Cougars’ win. WNCC fell behind early at 4-2, but came storming back in taking a 9-4 lead on a Sipolina 3-pointer. WNCC closed out the quarter on a 9-2 run that included Aviles hitting a shot just before the final quarter buzzer to lead 22-11.
The second quarter saw WNCC build a 26-12 lead and led 31-23 on a Johnson bucket with 3:23 to play. Lamar came back as they scored six straight to make it a 31-29 before Johnson hit a bucket to close out the first half scoring and a 33-29 WNCC lead.
The third quarter was wild as the two teams combined for 47 points. Early on it was back and forth until WNCC took a 45-37 lead with 5:10 to play. Lamar fought back to make it 45-41. WNCC went up 50-42 after Juseana-Rae Delatori buried a 3-pointer just before the shot clock buzzer went off. Lamar came back to make it a 50-46 game. Delatori did it again, hitting a 2-point bucket just before the shot clock buzzer sounded and that shot started an 8-5 run to give the Cougars a 58-51 lead after three.
Lamar made the first bucket in the fourth quarter to get within five. WNCC scored the next nine points to go up 67-53 including a bit 3-pointer by Chesta-Carty. The Cougars continued excelling and Chesta-Carty buried a trey with just under four minutes to play before the shot chock expired to give the Cougars a 73-55 lead. WNCC never looked back after that.
WNCC will look to go 3-0 in the South Sub-region when they host Southeast Community College on Saturday at 1 p.m. Southeast and North Platte moved up to Division I this season from Division II so the Bobcats will be the first time in several years to play all the South teams in conference since the 1990s.
Davis said going 3-0 in the conference is key and they can’t take any team lightly
“Going 3-0 would be a good start and this was a big win because I think Lamar was at the bottom of the league last year and he has done such a good job in one year flipping that around,” Davis said. “I knew this was going to be a tough game. So, to be able to beat them the first time around, I thought, was really important. We’ll see if we can keep it going against Southeast on Saturday.”

WNCC men fall with another heartbreaker
The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team held Lamar Community College to just 23 first-half points. The second half was a different story as Lamar scored 52 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer by Ahmed Cisse with 2.7 seconds left to get the South Sub-region win over the Cougars 75-72.
It was the third straight game where the Cougars lost with an opponent shot in the final 10 seconds. Even with the loss, though, WNCC head coach Roybell Baez said he was proud of the way his team competed, playing hard for the entire 40 minutes. Baez said they just need to find a way to close out a game.
“It’s college basketball and I’m in there trying to make sure these dudes don’t fall apart because they wanted this game really bad. You can tell by how hard we’re playing that it matters and it means something,” Baez said. “You know, sometimes the basketball just doesn’t fall your way. I am actually really proud of our guys. I thought that tonight was a night where they fought together. They put together a bunch of really good runs and we had a shot to win the game and we didn’t. So, the next step for us is figuring out how to close games because we had an opportunity to win tonight and we didn’t.”
It was a win the Cougars played strong. WNCC allowed just one run over four points and that was early in the second half when Lamar went on a 8-0 run. Other than that, WNCC played tough and battled right along with Lamar.
The two squads combined for 40 fouls and 52 free throw attempts. The two teams also combined for 83 rebounds with Lamar winning that total 47-36.
WNCC did win the 3-point battle as they made 10 3-pointers to just three for Lamar. But, the triple that mattered the most came from Cisse with 2.7 seconds left. After that made 3-pointer, WNCC tried to make a long pass that sailed out of bounds and Lamar got the ball right back. WNCC had to foul and RJ Foreman made one of two free throws to seal the win with 1.9 seconds left. A three-quarters of a court shot at the buzzer hit the rim but wouldn’t go in.
With the way the team played, Baez couldn’t be prouder of their effort against a bigger squad than the Cougars.
“I thought our guys were flying around and the press was working,” Baez said. “We got a bunch of steals and we were playing transition. In the second half, they did a really good job of getting downhill and putting pressure on the rim. You know it came back to bite us because they’re huge. You saw how much bigger they were than us and they just kept going inside. We had no answer for them.”
WNCC will have little time to rest as they will play their fourth game in eight days when they host Southeast Community College on Saturday. The women’s game starts at 1 p.m. with the men’s game to follow.
Baez said that will not be an easy game either because Southeast has a good squad and his team will need to be ready.
“Southeast is really, really good, too, and it’s going to be a real test for us and we will see how we show up,” he said. “Can you respond or you feel sorry for yourself. There’s no time to feel sorry for yourself.”
Lamar started the game up 4-0 and led 15-13 with about 10 minutes left in the opening half. That was when WNCC went on a 10-0 run that was spearheaded by 3-pointers by Kellon Harris and Xavier Kirkpatrick and an eye-popping dunk by Noah Jones for a 23-15 lead. WNCC kept that lead as they led 34-23 going into intermission.
The second half saw WNCC lead 41-30. That was when Lamar went on their biggest run of eight points to make it a 41-38 lead. Lamar took their first lead since the first with 12L18 play on a bucket by Foreman at 48-47. WNCC answered as they went back up by eight at 56-48 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Viktor Lukic-Gavric and Noah Jones.
Lamar tied the game at 62-62 with five minutes to play, but the Cougars responded with a 5-0 run that saw Harris grab an offensive rebound and put the ball back in the bucket for a 67-62 lead. WNCC led 69-65 with three minutes to play. Lamar tied the game at 69 with 2:06 to play.
WNCC went back in front 70-69 on one made free throw. Lamar went ahead at 71-70 with 49 seconds left. WNCC went in front on a Jones bucket with 14 seconds to play and it seemed WNCC was going to get the win. That was when Cisse hit the 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds left for the go-ahead and game winner.
WNCC had four players in double figures, led by Jones with 17 points with two 3-pointers. Kirkpatrick and Harris each had 12 points while Linis had 10. Kirkpatrick had three 3-pointers while Harris had two.
