City of Gering holds public discussion for 2023-2024 fiscal year budget

GERING, Neb. (KNEP) - The City of Gering held a public discussion for the upcoming 2023-2024 fiscal year budget on Wednesday to gather input for the upcoming fiscal year.
In the discussion, the city announced it will not see an increase in its tax levy.
The City of Gering has a property tax levy of 34 cents per $100 of property valuation, this is the 13 lowest among first class cities in Nebraska. This tax levy does result in a tax request of $2,130,611.16. The city would be able to request $1,965,190.62 without going to a public hear under state law, but the tax request falls short by $57,608.97 which means the city will be going to public hearing on Sept. 20 to discuss a potential increase in property tax.
Each department is currently working on a goal to have 25 percent of its funds in reserve which can be used to fund future projects instead of the city taking on more debt.
The city will not take action on the budget until after the joint public meeting and is expected to vote on the budget in late September. The City of Gering can be contacted at 308-436-5096 with questions.
