Leyton finishes historic season as Class D2 runner-up
LINCOLN - Shelton used a consistent attack and balance play to capture their first ever Nebraska School Activities Association Class D2 State Volleyball Championship, sweeping Leyton in three straight sets (25-18, 26-24, 25-16), at the Devaney Sports Center on Saturday morning.
The Bulldogs (32-3) were led by Erin Gegg with 24 kills on 49 attempts, hitting .347 for the match. Jayln Branson also made a notable impact, recording 16 kills and adding 17 digs to secure the backcourt. Setter Macy Willis distributed 20 assists and chipped in seven digs of her own, while Ellie Morgan anchored the defense with a match-high 25 digs.
The Warriors' Shawnee Gamble finished with 11 kills, hitting .219. Riley Jones and Ella Haley each posted efficient hitting percentages, with Haley at a team-best .353.
Shelton’s defense held firm, keeping Leyton to a .109 overall hitting percentage and forcing 16 attack errors.
Leyton came close to winning set two, 26-24. Their runner-up finish is the best in school history and they posted a school best 35-1 record. The Warriors' previous best finish at the state level came in 2008, when they defeated Bancroft-Rosalie in four sets en route to a fourth-place finish in Class D1.
