High winds disrupt landfill operations in Sidney and Kimball
KIMBALL, Neb. — Gusty winds are causing disruptions across Cheyenne and Kimball counties, with a High Wind Warning in effect until 5 p.m. Monday evening. Northwest winds are reaching 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph.
The Kimball Landfill suspended acceptance of construction and debris (C&D) materials Monday due to the hazardous conditions. However, municipal household waste and tree or brush drop-offs were still being accepted.
In Sidney, the landfill’s compost site is closed indefinitely following a recent compost fire. Officials apologized for the inconvenience and ask for cooperation during this closure.
The high winds are also creating transportation hazards. Drivers of lightweight or high-profile vehicles, such as campers and tractor-trailers, should use extreme caution as strong crosswinds pose significant risks.
A High Wind Warning indicates expected sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or higher. These conditions can lead to property damage and safety risks. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items and limit travel if possible.
