SIDNEY, Neb. — Firefighters contained a large fire involving a tree pile Saturday night at the City of Sidney Solid Waste Facility north of Greenwood Cemetery.

The flames on the north side of town were visible from WNCC and near the I-80 interchange. Crews from the Sidney Volunteer Fire Department and Region 21 Emergency Management responded at 8:36 p.m., and quickly surrounded and contained the fire to the tree pile. Firefighters worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby trees and pasture grass. A nearby sign was threatened, but did not burn.

Fire Chief Matt Butts said they would remain on-site overnight to monitor the fire, which is being allowed to burn itself out. He says they aim to have it fully extinguished before forecasted gusty winds pick up on Sunday.

No injuries or structural damage have been reported.

According to reports, no one was spotted at the dump at the time of the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
