Ogallala - The Leyton Warriors built a 10-point second half lead Wednesday night, then held on for a thrilling 48-45 win over the South Platte Blue Knights (6-14) to advance to the championship game of the D2-11 Sub-District. The Warriors (10-11) will face top-seeded Hyannis (14-6) at 6:00 p.m. tonight at Prairie View School in Ogallala. The Longhorns pulled away from Potter-Dix (6-15) for a 44-37 semifinal win to earn their spot in the final.

The semifinal between Leyton and South Platte is what you would expect from the second and third seeds in the tournament. The Warriors outscored the Blue Knights by two points in each of the first two quarters, to send Leyton to the locker room with a 22-18 lead at intermission.

Leyton built their lead to 10 points early in the fourth period forcing a South Platte timeout. The Knights returned to the floor with increased defensive pressure, and senior Joey Spencer pumped in 9 of his game-high 22 points in the final stanza to cut the Warrior lead to just one. Leyton freshman Justin Ernest made a pair of late free throws to extend the Warrior lead to three. South Platte’s late attempts missed their mark, and Leyton survived 48-45.

Leyton was led in scoring by Zach Henke with 13 points, while Scout Gamble added 11 for the Warriors. Joey Spencer finished with 22 points for South Platte. Ethan Reichman chipped in 11 points for the Knights.

In the first semifinal of the night, the game between Potter-Dix and top-seeded Hyannis was a back-and-forth battle. The game was tied 6-6 after the first quarter, and the Longhorns held a 2-point 14-12 lead at halftime. The Coyotes refused to go away in the second half as Hyannis extended their lead to four, 26-22 heading into the final period.

The last 8 minutes of the game belonged to Hyannis’ Liam Kostman. The 6’4” sophomore scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the final period. After hitting a three-pointer early in the quarter, Kostman made 10 of 13 free throws down the stretch to end the Coyotes season with a 44-37 win.

Hyannis was led in scoring by the 20 points of Liam Kostman. Freshman Max Kostman added 10 for the Longhorns. Freshman Luke Kasten led the Coyotes with 15 points, while Anthony Tovar added 10 points for Potter-Dix.
