The Bridgeport boys’ basketball team saw their season come to an end as the Bulldogs fell to Doniphan-Trumbull 48-36 in the C2-7 District Final Monday night in Maxwell. With the loss, Bridgeport ends their year at 21-5.

The C2-7 District Final paired teams that mirrored one another in many ways, and the game reflected that most of the night. The biggest difference between the two teams was Doniphan-Trumbull had attempted 123 more free throws on the season than the Bulldogs, and Bridgeport had attempted 124 more three-pointers on the season than the Cardinals. Both stats played a role in the outcome of Monday’s game.

In the first quarter Bridgeport got off to a quick start, jumping to an early lead and forcing a Doniphan-Trumbull timeout. The Cardinals responded to narrow the Bulldog lead to 9-8 after the first quarter.

The two teams tussled back and forth the entire second period. Prior to the game, Bridgeport head coach Nick Broz said that the Bulldogs would need to limit their turnovers if they were to be successful in the game. Even though the Bulldogs committed 9 first-half turnovers, Bridgeport trailed the Cardinals by only one point at intermission, 20-19.

Doniphan-Trumbull started the second half like Bridgeport had started the game, expanding their lead to 30-22 while holding the Bulldogs to only one field goal in the period.

Over the first six minutes of the final period, Doniphan-Trumbull expanded their advantage over the Bulldogs to 16 points. Bridgeport countered with a press and behind 9 fourth-quarter points form junior Cole Faessler cut the Cardinal lead to eight with just over 1:30 to go. Doniphan-Trumbull hit 7 of 14 free throws in the period to send the Cardinals to the state tournament for the first time since 2014.
