Weymouth Field will shine as "Beacon of Light" tonight
The lights at Sidney High School’s Weymouth Field will light up the night this evening and again on the evening of Wednesday, April 15th.
SIDNEY - The lights at Sidney High School’s Weymouth Field, and across Nebraska and the nation, will light up the night Friday evening. Not to accommodate the hundreds of faithful Red Raider fans that fill the stands on Friday nights in the Fall, or to light up a twilight track meet in the Spring. This time it will be for a “Beacon of Light Ceremony.”
The stadium lights will shine tonight from 8:20 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. as a sign of hope and encouragement to honor the doctors, nurses and first responders on the front lines of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the graduating seniors.
On Wednesday, April 15th, the lights will be lit once again from 8:20 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. in a show of support for all the local athletes who are not able to participate this spring due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The concept of “Beacon of Lights” started in Dumas Texas in the Texas Panhandle as a way to brighten spirits for students stuck at home during the pandemic, and the idea has spread across the country. Area residents are asked to participate by turning on the outside lights at their homes at the same time both nights in a show of support.
