Authorities release name of man killed in standoff with Scottsbluff police

SCOTTSBLUFF - One man is dead following a standoff with authorities in Scottsbluff on Monday.
The Scottsbluff Police Department says officers were dispatched to the 2300 block of West Overland just before noon for reports of a man with a gun threatening to harm himself or others. There also were reports that shots had been fired at the home. No one else was inside the home, police said.
Officers were held at bay outside the home for nearly six hours as attempts by police and the man’s family to call him or communicate through a bullhorn were rebuffed, police said. After those attempts failed, police sent a team into the home to arrest the man, and police say he was shot when he fired on the officers.
The man, 47-year-old Daniel Ojeda was taken to a local hospital, where he died. Police did not immediately release his name or the names of the officers involved.
Scottsbluff Police Chief Kevin Spencer said no officers were injured in the shootout.
“We have the good fortune of all of the officers and administrators being able to work together,” Spencer said. “I think it’s kind of unique to our area that we all get along very well and we keep our organizational pride in check when it comes to events like this we rely on each other.”
The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating the shooting. State law requires a grand jury investigation anytime someone dies in police custody or during an arrest.
The Scottsbluff Police Department, Gering Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Department, Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Game and Parks Department responded to the scene.
At the request of the Scotts Bluff County Attorney, the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office has been appointed to conduct the grand jury investigation which is required by Nebraska law when an officer involved shooting occurs.
