Truck enters construction zone, drives in wet cement
SIDNEY, NE — Construction on the Highway 30 portion of the Link 17J project in Sidney was temporarily set back after a truck drove into wet cement last week.
According to authorities, the crash occurred Tuesday, Nov. 16. Officials say a single-unit truck was traveling through the construction zone on Highway 30 west of Link 17J.
The driver, identified as Stephen Desmit of Fremont, Neb., went into a closed off area of the zone while heading east. Once he realized this, he attempted to cross over the median dividing the east and west bound lanes.
The cement in the median, however, was still wet. When Desmit drove into it, it destroyed some of the work.
Sidney City Manager David Scott says the accident caused an estimated $15,000-$20,000 in damage. The project was set back about two days to fix the damage.
The redone median has since dried and opened, although work continues in the area as of Monday.
