SIDNEY – The Sidney Lady Raiders and Red Raiders capped off three days of impressive tournament basketball by hoisting first place trophies at the Sidney Holiday Tournament on Wednesday afternoon. The Lady Raiders beat Chase County for the second time this season to capture the girls bracket, while the Red Raiders knocked off an undefeated Gordon-Rushville team to win the boys bracket.

The Lady Raiders, who edged the Chase County 53-50 on December 10th at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility, burst from the gate behind 8 points from Emilee Wieser to take a 19-6 lead after the first period of play in the girl’s championship game.

Chase County responded by holding Sidney scoreless for the first 5:18 of the second period as Longhorn Junior Bryn McNair spurred a 9-0 run to cut the Sidney lead to 19-15. Sidney fought back to close the first half on a 6-2 run to lead 25-17 at intermission.

Sidney senior Alecca Campbell scored 6 of her team-high 13 points in the third period to help keep the Longhorns at bay and send the Lady Raiders to the final quarter with a double-digit, 37-26 advantage. Sidney continued to build on their advantage in the final stanza for a 48-34 win.

With the win, the Lady Raiders improve to 9-1 on the season.

The boy’s final pitted the 8-1 Red Raiders against 8-0 Gordon-Rushville. The Mustangs, who were coming off an emotional 49-48 last second win over McCook in Tuesday’s semifinal, showed no signs of a letdown in the championship game. Both teams came out firing and battled to a 10-10 tie after the first quarter.

Sidney was able to hold the Mustangs leading scorer, 6’6” junior Jace Nelson (13.3 ppg), scoreless in the second period and just 2 points in the half while building a 21-16 lead going into intermission.

Sidney opened the second half on a 14-4 run to build a commanding 35-20 lead with 2:00 remaining in the third quarter. The Mustangs closed the period with a 9-3 run of their own to shrink the Sidney advantage to 38-29 heading into the final period.

Sidney had an answer for whatever the Mustangs threw at them in the fourth quarter. Gordon-Rushville never got closer than 5 points down the stretch.

Sophomore Isak Doty equaled the Sidney single game school record for made three-pointers with 7, to lead all scorers with 25 points. With the win, the Red Raiders improve to 9-1 on the season.
