With the surge in Covid cases, testing centers are popping up.

Some people are saying the places they went to get tested seem unprofessional. Patrons are worried they may have been scammed.

Heather Bott was looking for a Covid-19 testing site. Bott splits her time between Madison and Milwaukee, visiting her dad who is vulnerable to the virus.

Bott talks about how she is extra careful and has to get tested frequently to protect her dad. "I'm trying to be very careful, that's the thing. As soon as I left my dads, if I could get a test that would be good."

However, Bott was unsettled after leaving a testing site on Monday.

The person running the clinic took photos of her medicare card and driver's license. After they took her cheek swab they immediately threw it out.

Bott stated, "It makes me feel very vulnerable." Bott is one of several people to reach out to the newsroom to report activity like this.

We followed back up with the business bureau with these concerns.

Tiffany Bernhardt Schultz of the Better Business Bureau informed, "You want to make sure that you know what they're doing with your personal information, Who has access to it? How long is it being stored? How is it being destroyed? When is it being destroyed?"

Testing centers do not require and I-D or proof of insurance card to get a swab.

Ken Van Horn for Public Health Madison & Dane County had some words about this experience, "We don't do that. Typically the sites that are charging insurance are going to want your insurance information and ID, and that's so they can appropriately bill. There are a lot of sites like ours that don't need that information in order to give you a test."

Testing Director Van Horn says that the best way to be sure you're at a legitimate site is to check the PHMDC website. Van Horn mentioned, "The places we trust and are willing to recommend to people are listed on the web site."

From now of Bott said she will be checking that website. "We want to be careful and protect people in our lives by getting these tests but we also need to be using good judgment about where we go, because we are giving up a lot of information and we really don't know where that info is going."

The better business bureau is looking into the testing site Bott visited to determine if it is legitimate.
