The Chadron State College women’s basketball team (6-10, 5-6 RMAC) outlasted South Dakota Mines (1-17, 1-11 RMAC) 89-82 during a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference showdown at home Saturday night.  

Though CSC never gave up the lead, Mines did not go down without a fight as it outscored the Eagles 45-41 in the second half and had 47 bench points. The win gives the Eagles their sixth win of the season, all of which have come while playing at home in the Chicoine Center. 

“[Mines] is a good team and they are on the cusp of winning,” said Head Women’s Basketball Coach Janet Raymer. “We were able to hold on tonight for the win, but they didn’t make it easy on us.” 

In the first quarter, Chadron State jumped out to a 10-0 lead off field goals by Samiyah WorrellJori Peters, and Ashayla Powers. Mines’ Naomi Hidalgo finally broke the ice for the Hardrockers with a layup at 4:48. The score was 19-13 Eagles heading into the second quarter. 

Both teams’ offenses exploded in the second quarter. The Eagles shot 53.3% on field goals (8-15), 50% on three-pointers (1-2), and a staggering 75% on free throws (12-16) while the Hardrockers shot 33.3% on field goals (5-15), 33.3% on three-pointers (3-9), and 91.7% on free throws (11-12). CSC’s 29 second-quarter points mark as one of its best efforts in a quarter this season. It was 48-37 Eagles  

Worrell was the only Eagle to land a three-pointer in the first half. 

Strong offensive play continued for both teams in the third and fourth quarters. Worrell and Bailey Brooks each added a three-pointer in the third quarter while the Hardrockers added three of their own to chip into the Eagles’ lead. CSC’s Micheala Dammann contributed two layups and an assist to help keep the Eagles up by nine points at the end of the quarter. 

Mines landed four three-pointers during the fourth quarter. Three of them came from Piper Bauer and one came from Ryan Weiss. Bauer’s third trey pushed the Hardrockers to within a two-point deficit at 75-73 with 5:29 left in the game. But it was the Eagles’ 11 made free throws as well as six field goals by Peters, Dammann, and Worrell that kept them above South Dakota Mines, closing the game 89-82. 

“Our players love each other, share the ball, and celebrate the little things,” said Raymer. “I’m proud of the things they are doing.” 

The Eagles will be back in action on Monday when they host Westminster Griffins (8-5, 7-2 RMAC) at 2 p.m.

Cold Finish Dooms Eagles In 65-62 Loss At Home To SD Mines

The Chadron State College men’s basketball team held a 53-43 lead midway in the second half, but was outscored 20-7 the rest of the way and dropped a 65-62 decision to South Dakota Mines at home Saturday night.

The Eagles also started the game slowly.  They did not score in the first 5 ½ minutes while Mines took a 7-0 lead.  The Hardrockers went ahead by as much as 22-8 before the Chadron State got untracked, led by Teddy Parham, Jr., who scored 16 points in nine minutes to help make the halftime score 32-32.

Two field goals and two free throws by Mason Hiemstra and three-pointers by Tejaun Hale and KJ Harris helped the Eagles put together a 13-5 run that gave them their 10-point margin with 10:42 to play. 

However, the Eagles made just four of their final 18 field goal attempts.  Consecutive three-point shots by three different Hardrockers in less than two minutes cut the difference to a single point. Chadron State took the lead again at 60-58 on a dunk by Taj-Maal Toney with 4:48 remaining, but the Eagles just one more time while Mines managed two field goals and three free shots to seal the verdict.

Just five players scored for the Hardrockers. Junior forward Kolten Mortensen led with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Redshirt freshman Brevin Walter added 15 points and eight rebounds while guard Alejandro Rama had 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists.   

Parham paced the Eagles with 19 points while Hiemstra and Marcus Jefferson both had 11.

Both teams made nine three-pointers, but Mines took 25 shots from behind the arc and the Eagles 36.  The Hardrockers were 22 of 40 overall for 44.9% and Chadron State was 23-66 for 34.8%. The visitors were 12-17 at the free throw line and the Eagles 7-8. 

Mines outrebounded the Eagles 40-33.  CSC had only seven turnovers and Mines 18.

The Hardrockers are 7-11 overall and 5-7 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The Eagles are 7-12 and 3-8
