CHADRON – The Sidney girls and boys basketball teams avenged a pair of home losses to Chadron two weeks earlier, this time on the Cardinals home floor. The Lady Raiders saw a their 11-point lead at halftime vanish in the third period, but battled to a 64-56 win in overtime while the Red Raiders used a hot start from Jacob Dowse and Micah Schneider on their way to a 65-53 victory.

The Lady Raiders got 6 early points from junior Reese Riddle, all in the paint, and a pressure defense to jump out to a 17-12 first quarter lead. Despite Chadron getting 11 second-quarter points from sophomore Demi Ferguson, Sidney continued their defensive pressure, while four Lady Raiders made three-pointers, as Sidney built a 39-28 halftime lead.

Chadron started the second half on a 13-2 run to erase the Sidney’s lead and tie the game at 41. The Lady Raiders were outscored 16-6 in the third period but still held the lead 45-44. The Cardinals however too their first lead of the game early in the fourth quarter 46-45. The two Western Conference foes exchanged blows throughout the final period. Reese Riddle made a pair of free throws to give Sidney a 55-52 lead with 10.1 seconds to play. But the Cardinals got the ball in the hands of Demi Ferguson and the sophomore drained a three at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.

Overtime belonged to the Lady Raiders. Riddle scored 7 of Sidney’s 9 points in the extra period while the Sidney defense held the Cardinals to just 1 of 3 from the free throw line and a 64-56 win. Reese Riddle led Sidney with 23 points while Gabby Fortner chipped in 11.

In the boys game, Micah Schneider made 3 three-pointers, and Jacob Dowse added 6 points in the paint, to propel the Red Raiders to a 15-8 lead after the first quarter. Senior Sawyer Dickman paced the Red Raiders with 8 points in the second quarter while Schneider added another three-pointer to his total to send Sidney into intermission with a 32-25 lead.

Sidney expanded on their lead in the third quarter as Dowse added 6 more points to his total and senior Jonathan Carillo came off the bench and chipped 4 points to help Sidney build a 49-39 lead after three periods. Chadron tried to rally but Sidney made 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch to keep the Cardinals at bay for the 65-53 win.

Jacob Dowse and Micah Schneider paced the Sidney scoring with 19 points each. Sawyer Dickman made 10 of 12 free throws and a pair of field goals to contribute 14 points

The Sidney Lady Raiders and Red Raiders return to the hardwood on Tuesday niht when the host the Scottsbluff Bearcats at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility. Junior varsity games will start at 4:00 p.m. Girls varsity is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. with the boys varsity to follow at 7:00 p.m.
