SIDNEY - The Scottsbluff Bearcat Wrestling team had 12 state qualifiers to run away with the B-4 District wrestling tournament Friday and Saturday in Sidney. The Bearcats had only one district champion on the way to scoring 189.5 points to easily outdistanced Beatrice’s 165 points for the team title. Gering (142.5) finished third while Cozad (125) was fourth. Boone Central (118.5) was fifth followed by Chadron (98) in sixth, Sidney (89) in seventh, and Lexington (82.5) in eighth. McCook (42), Gothenburg (40), Alliance (16) and Holdrege (14) round out the 12-team tournament.

Sidney qualified 4 wrestlers for the Nebraska State High School Wrestling Championships, including a pair of district champions on their way to a seventh-place finish. Chance Houser (34-5) took the gold at 113 pounds and Austin Munier (39-5) captured first at 126 pounds. Also qualifying for state with fourth place finishes was Dietrich Lecher (25-9) at 182 and Landon Hanes (24-14) at 220 lbs.

Chance Houser opened the tournament at with a bye into the quarterfinals where he pinned Oscar Felix of Scottsbluff to advance to the semifinals. There, Houser earned a spot in the championship match with a 16-0 Tech fall over Isaiah Murillo of Gering. Chance finished off his district with another pin in the first-place match against Gavin Vanover of Beatrice to take home the gold. Chance Houser will open the State Championships against the fourth-place finisher from the B-1 district, Rex Floerchinger (13-7) of Omaha Gross Catholic

Austin Munier also received a bye into the quarterfinals where he defeated Benjamin Cassatt-Reina of Alliance by Techy fall, 16-1. Munier earned hi place in the championship match with a pin in the semifinals over Lexington’s Cesar Cano. Austin capped off his day by pinning Bryce Karlin of Beatrice for the 126 championship. Austin Munier will face the fourth place finisher from the B-3 district in his first state tournament match, Gavin Ienn (25-18) of Elkhorn

Other first round matchups for Sidney will have Dietrich Lecher (25-9) beginning his state tournament quest against the B-1 district champion, Max Denson (45-8) of Broken Bow and Landon Hanes (24-14) squaring off against the B-2 district champion in his first match, Jay Ballard (22-2) of Boys Town.

Sidney will host a state sendoff for the Red Raider wrestlers Wednesday morning at 10:00 a.m. on the west side of the commons area in the High School. The public is invited and encouraged to come wish the wrestlers good luck at state!
