STERLING Col. -- Sterling boys basketball head to the state tournament this weekend, and they'll do so as the number two seed.

Head Coach Mike Holloway has been coaching the high school boys in Sterling for 19 years.

“It’s been a fun team to coach and we’ve had a really good year this far” Holloway says.

Holloway says the team is successful because of the strong leadership the seniors bring and how hard the boys work even during the off season.

“I think we have gotten better as the years have gone on, and we’ve got some good senior leadership” says Holloway.

Holloway is impressed with the season they have had so far.

“I knew that we had a chance to be a good team, we had 5 seniors coming out, I didn’t necessarily expect to be 20 and two and be the number two seed into the state tournament” Holloway says.

Senior, Jackson Keil agrees that the team has grown a lot and plans to make it far into the tournament.

“I think we can make it all the way like we have the past couple of years.” Keil says

The team won the state tournament in 2017 and has made it to the final four every year since then.

Sterling has their first game Friday, March 4th against Prospect Ridge in Broomfield. Holloway says Prospect Ridge is a good team and will be a challenge, but are still expecting to play well and get past Friday's game.

If Sterling wins on Friday they play at home on Saturday.

“We are thankful for the support we’ve always been very fortunate, we’ve been lucky to have some good kids come through and have some pretty good teams and the community has supported us wonderfully over the years. We get good turnouts for games, especially state tournament games so we are excited for this weekend and hope to see a lot of people come out and watch” says Holloway.
