The Big Red hits the road again, anticipating this Saturday's tri-meet against Air Force and Army in Colorado after previously collecting yet another win at home in Lincoln. The Huskers are set to compete in Colorado Springs on Falcon territory on Saturday, March 12 at 2:00 p.m. CT.

Last Time Out
Nebraska rallies into the weekend after snatching the home-meet win against Big Ten opponent Illinois 408.050-406.150, with GymACT clubs Iowa and Minnesota placing in third and fourth respectively. 

NU claimed their second-best team score of the season on senior night, in addition to claiming three event titles in the four-team battle this past Saturday. Junior Sam Phillips earned the high bar title with a score of 14.10. Senior Jake Bonnay notched a 14.05 on floor, good for the title. Senior Charlie Giles made a mark after taking the vault title with an impressive 15.05. Notably, the last Husker to notch a score in the 15's on vault was back in 2019.

Looking ahead, the Huskers are ranked third overall ahead of their tri-meet this weekend. Following the all-around, NU ranks second on floor, pommel horse, high bar, third on vault and parallel bars, and fifth on still rings.

Individually, senior Jake Bonnay ranks third on floor, senior Charlie Giles ranks fourth on pommel horse, and junior Donte McKinney holds fifth rank on high bar.

Scouting the Competition
Air Force ranks thirteenth in the NCAA after registering a season-high team score of 380.600 in MPSF triangular against Stanford, California at Burnham Pavilion, despite claiming third place at the meet.

No. 10 Army looks to bounce back after a recent loss against Michigan 384.100-412.850, with William & Mary falling in third place. The Black Knight's Matthew Davis is ranked third in the all-around with a 77.293 average.

Huskers Begin Play at Queen's Cup

The Nebraska beach volleyball team began competition at the Queen's Cup in Honolulu, Hawaii on Thursday.

The Huskers faced unbeaten No. 3 TCU in the opening match and fell 5-0 to the Horned Frogs. Nicklin Hames and Lindsay Krause were most competitive for the Big Red in their No. 4 match, losing a tight one, 21-18, 22-20. Bekka Allick and Lexi Rodriguez also pushed TCU's No. 3 pair, falling 21-18, 21-18. 

In the second match of the day, the Huskers battled but fell just short to UC Davis, 3-2. Madi Kubik and Kenzie Knuckles were 21-18, 21-17 winners as the Huskers' top pair. Ally Batenhorst and Keonilei Akana also provided a 21-12, 21-12 win in the No. 2 spot. The other three matches went to UC Davis in straight sets. 

Nebraska, now 5-6 on the season, is back on Queen's Beach on Friday for matches against No. 10 California at Noon and No. 9 Hawaii at 4 p.m.

NU Moves Up In Recent Poll

Lincoln, Neb - The Nebraska bowling team climbed to second place in the National Ten Pin Coaches Association (NTCA) released Thursday. NU received 16 first-place votes and totaled 1,519 points. 

The Huskers added two tournament titles to their season since the last poll, winning the Mid-Winter Invitational and the Big Red Invitational.

McKendree remains at the top of the poll with 1,537 points and 24 first-place votes. Sam Houston is in third with two first place votes and 1,343 points. Vanderbilt and North Carolina A&T round out the top five.

The Huskers return to the lanes next March 18-20, at the Music City Classic in Smyrna, Ten. 

Huskers Head to NCAA Indoor Championships

Seven Nebraska track and field student-athletes will head to Birmingham, Alabama this week for the NCAA Indoor Championships, set for Friday-Saturday March 11-12 at Birmingham CrossPlex. The Huskers have eight entries in total, the most for the Big Red at the NCAA Indoor Championships since qualifying eight in 2015. The meet will have live streams available at WatchESPN.com. 
 
Nebraska's qualifiers are Darius Luff (60m hurdles), Mayson Conner (high jump), Jenna Rogers (high jump), Darby Thomas (long jump), Burger Lambrechts Jr. (shot put), Alex Talley (shot put, weight throw) and Axelina Johansson (shot put). 
 
Talley is the first men's thrower to qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships in the shot put and weight throw in school history. Janis Leitis and Mara Griva are the last Huskers to compete in multiple field events at the NCAA Indoor Championships, with both competing in the long jump and triple jump in 2013.
 
Talley ranks ninth nationally in the shot put and weight throw. The Big Ten champion in the weight throw set a school record this season with a throw of 73-3 1/2 (22.34m) at the K-State Winter Invitational. Talley placed second in the shot put at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and sits fifth all-time in program history with a mark of 65-7 (19.99m) in his win at the K-State Winter Invitational.
 
Lambrechts Jr. ranks seventh nationally in the shot put after his season-best throw of 65-3 (20.19m) won him the Big Ten title for the second consecutive season. In 2021, Lambrechts Jr. was a USTFCCCA First-Team All-American with a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships, the best finish by a Husker male in the shot put at the NCAA Indoor Championships since 2004.
 
Conner sits eighth in the country in the high jump after clearing a season-best height of 7-3 1/4 (2.22m) to win the Tyson Invitational this season. Conner won the Big Ten title with a clearance of 7-2 1/2 (2.20m) and has led the Big Ten in the high jump all season.
 
Luff is tied for ninth nationally in the 60m hurdles with a personal-best time of 7.67. The Lincoln native leads the Big Ten this year and moved into a tie for third all-time in program history after clocking the 7.67 at the Tyson Invitational.
 
Johansson is ranked third nationally in the shot put after throwing a season-best 59-9 3/4 (18.23m) at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite, which ranks her second in program history. Johansson finished third at the Big Ten Indoor Championships in her first season at Nebraska.
 
Thomas is tied for eighth nationally in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 21-5 1/2 (6.54m) at the Nebraska Tune-Up. Thomas took home the Big Ten title in the long jump with a jump of 20-11 3/4 at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and currently ranks No. 3 all-time in program history in the long jump.
 
Rogers is tied for 10th nationally in the high jump with a clearance of 6-0 3/4 (1.85m) at the Tyson Invitational this season. Rogers is currently tied for eighth in program history and is the highest ranked Big Ten high jumper this season, while winning the Big Ten title at the Big Ten Indoor Championships with a height of 5-11 1/4 (1.81m).

Huskers Travel West to Continue Non-Conference Play

The Nebraska softball team is set for a tournament in California hosted by Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State. The Huskers will play five games, starting with a matchup against Sacramento State on Friday, March 11 at 2 p.m. CT. 

Following game one, the Huskers will take on Cal State Fullerton on its home field at 4:30 p.m. CT. 

The Huskers will have one game on Sunday against Boston. NU will take on the 2021 Patriot League Championships at 11 a.m. CT. 

NU will finish the weekend with two games on Sunday. At 11 a.m. CT, the Huskers will face Central Florida. Later, Nebraska will face Long Beach State on its home field at 4 p.m. CT. 

Scouting the Opponents
Sacramento State (11-8) is on a five-game win streak after going undefeated at the Capital Classic. The Hornets are led by Marissa Bertuccio and Lewa Day, who both received Big Sky Conference weekly honors this past week. As a team, the Hornets are batting .285 and holding opponents to .278.

Cal State Fullerton (14-8) competed at the Judi Garman Classic, finishing the weekend 3-2. The Titans picked up wins against Kansas, Fresno State and Weber State, but fell to Seattle and Utah.Hannah Becerra leads the Titans with a .391 batting average including seven home runs. In the circle, Myka Sutherlin (4-3) and Alexia Silvas (4-2) lead both with four wins. 

Boston (10-10) finishing 3-2 last weekend at the San Diego Classic. The Terriers started slow, losing to California and Utah State, but finished the last three games with wins against UC San Diego, San Diego and San Diego State. Junior Lizzy Avery (5-6. 3.32 ERA) has made 12 starts for the Terriers, tallying 54 strikeouts in 563.1 innings. Offensively, Kayla Roncin leads BU with a .433 batting average and 17 RBIs. 

Central Florida (17-7) is on a six-game win streak following victories over Fresno State, Pacific, South Carolina and three against Florida Gulf Coast. Shannon Doherty leads the Knights with a .357 batting average, three home run sand 14 RBIs. In the circle, Gianna Mancha (6-2) leads with 35 strikeouts and a 3.24 ERA. 

Long Beach State (8-10) tallied a 3-1 record at the San Diego Classic. The Beach picked up wins against Utah State, San Diego and San Diego State, but fell to Stony Brook in eight innings. Leading the offense is senior Naomi Hernandez, batting .436 with 24 hits and 8 RBIs.

Hietaranta Continues Strong 2022 Campaign
• Roni Hietaranta started the year off strong, winning his first six singles matches to begin the season with a 6-0 record. Dating back to the fall, he now has 15 total singles wins which marks the most on the team thus far.
• On Jan. 25, Hietaranta was named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week after singles wins over Baylor and Oklahoma. He knocked off the No. 54 ranked singles competitor in the nation, defeating Oklahoma's Jordan Hasson, 6-4, 7-5. The Lappeenranta, Finland native also defeated Baylor's Cole Gromley in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-3.
• Three weeks ago, Hietaranta rallied back from a 4-2 hole to knock off Wichita State's Orel Ovil and clinch the victory for the Huskers. He won the singles match against Ovil 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Last weekend, he knocked off Princeton's Filippos Astreinidis in consecutive sets to push his spring record to 7-3.

Moreno and Wiedenhorn Shine In Singles/Doubles Play
• Victor Moreno Lozano currently holds the second-most wins for the Huskers as he boasts a 5-3 singles record for Nebraska this season. He's gathered three victories in the No. 5 spot and two in the No. 6 spot for the Big Red, defeating Wichita State's Alex Richards to help fuel to comeback victory for Nebraska three weeks ago.
• Nic Wiedenhorn is 2-7 in singles action, but has regularly competed towards the top of the lineup for the Huskers. He began the season winning two of his first three matches and even knocked off Oklahoma's Baptiste Anselmo, 7-6(10), 7-6(6).
• In doubles action, the duo made it to the semifinals of the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships, knocking off three, seeded teams in the tournament. They boasted a 5-1 record over the six games they played, and are now 8-5 as a team overall, with the most doubles wins on the team.

Tough Schedule Early
• Nebraska has matched up against five, top 30 teams in its first 12 games to begin the spring season. They lost to No. 2 Baylor at home, 6-1, and No. 24 Oklahoma on the road, 5-2 earlier in the year.
• In the Blue-Gray National Classic, they dropped matches to both No. 29 Princeton and No. 25 Auburn. Nebraska recently lost to No. 19 Pepperdine before taking part in the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships this past weekend.
• Once they reach the back half of their schedule, the Huskers will meet currently ranked opponents in seven of their last 13 games.

Huskers Head to South Carolina

The Nebraska women's golf team opens Spring Break with a trip to the Briar's Creek Invitational in John's Island, South Carolina, March 14-15.

The Huskers will be part of a strong 18-team field that features 15 top-100 teams including seven Big Ten schools with Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Penn State, Wisconsin and Nebraska making up nearly half the field. Boston College, Campbell, Colorado, East Carolina, Kansas, NC State, Old Dominion, Tulane, Central Florida, Charleston Southern and the hosts and defending champions from the College of Charleston complete an impressive field.

After a practice round on Sunday, action begins on Monday, March 14 with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (CT) to set up the first two rounds of continuous play. The tournament concludes with a final round on Tuesday, March 15 with a shotgun start at 7:45 a.m. (CT).

The Huskers hope to continue building momentum and improving their chances to earn a second straight NCAA Regional berth with a solid showing in South Carolina. Nebraska is coming off a runner-up finish at the 14-team Westbrook Spring Invitational (Feb. 27-28). Megan Whittaker took seventh individually to secure her second top-10 finish of the season by firing a career-best 209 (70-72-69). She was also named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week (March 2). Vanessa Bouvet added a career-best 213 (68-72-73) to tie for 13th.
