Norman, Okla.- The Huskers traveled to the University of Oklahoma to compete in Day 1 of the NCAA Men's Gymnastics Championships- Qualifiers at the Lloyd Noble Center on Friday afternoon. The Huskers snagged a second-place finish with a final team score of 411.388, a season-high team score for NU. In addition to Nebraska, Illinois and Stanford will compete in the finals tomorrow evening, alongside the top three teams from session two.

Nebraska collected 2 career-highs and 3 season-highs during the competition. Donte McKinney landed third place on vault with a score of 14.733, and Dillan King claimed second place overall in high bar with a score of 13.866.

Rotation One
NU jump started the competition on parallel bars, led off by senior Dylan LeClair notching a 13.60. Sophomore Taylor Christopulos followed and put up a 13.233, a career-high for the Husker. Juniors Sam Phillips registered a 13.67 and Dylan Young collected a 13.333, a season-high. Captain Dillan King anchored the rotation for Nebraska, scoring a 13.933. 

Nebraska closed out the first rotation on parallel bars with a running-team score 67.765, in third place behind Illinois in second after competing on floor (69.032) and Stanford in first after competing on vault (73.266). 

Rotation Two
The Big Red maintained their momentum on high bar for the second rotation with Dillan King steering Nebraska in the right direction after posting a 13.866. Donte McKinney impressed with strength after notching a 13.700.. Dylan LeClair scored a 13.10 and Taylor Christopulos posted a 13.333. Sam Phillips rounded off the rotation for the Huskers with a score of 13.733. 

Nebraska moved into the third rotation with a running-score of 135.497, holding second-position behind Stanford (145.232).

Rotation Three
The Huskers showed floor for the third rotation tallying a score of 68.398. Dylan LeClair makes way again for Nebraska, notching a 13.70 to lead off. Chris Hiser scored a 13.233 and Taylor Christopulos put up a 13.466. Charlie Giles followed, posting a 13.933. Sam Phillips anchored for the squad, registering an impressive 14.066. 

Moving into the fourth rotation, Nebraska tallied a running-score of 203.895, maintaining second place and trailing close behind first-place Stanford (213.330).

Rotation Four
The Cornhuskers sustained their energy in the fourth rotation as they transitioned to pommel horse where Khalil Jackson collected a 13.80. Not far behind, Charlie Giles put up a 13.60 for NU. Travis Wong and Evan Kriley notched a 13.466 and 13.333, respectively. Taylor Christopulos posted a 13.266.

Nebraska moved into the fifth rotation in third place with a running-score of 271.360, less than a tenth behind Illinois in second (271.427). Stanford continued to occupy first place with a score of 284.861.

Rotation Five
Liam Doherty-Herwitz showed talent on rings after impressing with a score of 13.966, a career-high for the junior. Junior Mortiz Mueller put up a 13.166 and senior Dylan LeClair earned a 13.633. Junior Sam Phillips notched a 13.566 while junior Dylan Young notched a 13.166 for the Big Red.

Moving into the final rotation of session I of the NCAA Championship Qualifiers, Nebraska holds a running score of 338.857 in third place behind Illinois (340.892) in second, and Stanford in first (354.860).

Rotation Six
The Huskers fired into their final rotation on vault where they continued to rally after collecting a 72.531 event score. Donte McKinney impressed with strength, posting a season-high 14.733. Dylan LeClair collected a 14.466, a season-high. Sam Phillips notched a 14.266, while teammate Charlie Giles earned a 14.633 on the event. Taylor Christopulos rounded off the lineup, putting up a 14.433.

Nebraska competed with high intensity throughout the qualifiers, snagging a second-place finish with a final score of 411.388 among the session I competitors. No. 5 ranked Illinois followed in third place with a 406.691, and No.1 Stanford claimed first place with a score of 426.325.

The No.4 ranked Huskers are set to compete in session III of the NCAA Championships Finals. The championship will take place at the Lloyd Noble Center at 7:00 p.m. CT. The meet can be live streamed on www.SoonerSports.tv and will be broadcasted live by Stadium College Sports Central.

Three Huskers Named All-Americans

Lincoln, Neb – Three members of the Nebraska women's bowling program were honored Thursday night, as they were selected as National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA) All-Americans.

Sophomore Kayla Verstraete earned second-team All-America honors, while Cassidy Ray and Kendyl Hofmeister both earned honorable-mention honors. Both Ray, a three-time All-American, and Verstraete, a two-time pick, are repeat honorees, while this is Hofmeister's first All-America certificate.

Verstraete led NU's honorees as a third-team selection. The sophomore placed in the top 15 in seven of eight tournaments she competed in this past season. Her season was highlighted by a runner-up finish at the Columbia 300 Saints Invite with an average of 216.4, one of three top-five finishes on the year. She was named to the All-Tournament team at the Prairie View Invitational, Columbia 300 Saints Invite and the Big Red Invitational.

"Kayla had another solid season, and we are happy to see her being recognized for all of her hard work," Nebraska Coach Paul Klempa said.  "She continues to be trending upward with her progress as a player and there are more big things ahead for her."

Hofmeister captured honorable-mention honors for the first time, as she averaged a 207.8 on the season over seven tournaments. She was one of NU's most consistent bowlers, placing in the top 25 in all seven tournaments she competed in this season, Her best performance of 2021-22 came at the Bearcat Hammer Open, where she placed sixth en route to all-tournament Honors.

"Kendyl has quietly been a force for Husker Bowling the past three seasons," Klempa noted. "I am thrilled to see her finally get the recognition she deserves for her contributions to our program. Kendyl is an extremely solid player with nerves of steel."

Ray wrapped up her Husker career with her third certificate, after earning All-America honors in both 2020 and 2021. The team co-captain averaged a 207.2 over nine tournaments and led NU with six top-10 finishes. Her best effort of the year was at the Big Red Invitational, where she placed third with an average of 234.4.

"It good to see Cassidy finish her career at Nebraska by garnering her third consecutive All-American honor," Klempa said. "We are proud of the player and person Cassidy has grown into during her time with Husker Bowling. I am happy that Cassidy had a nice senior season, and she is being honored once again for her efforts and hard work."

Nebraska bowling now has had 37 bowlers combine for 80 All-America certificates since becoming a varsity sport in 1997-98. Dating back to its days as a club sport, NU now has had at least one bowler earn All-America honors in 29 straight seasons.

Huskers Host Gophers for Three-Game Series

The Nebraska softball team hosts Minnesota in Lincoln, Neb. this weekend, April 15-17. The Huskers will face the Gophers in game one on Friday starting at 5 p.m. This game will be broadcasted live on the Big Ten Network. Game two is set for Saturday at 1 p.m. while the final game of the series will be Sunday at 12 p.m. Saturday and Sunday's game will be streamed live on BTN+ (subscription required). Nebraska has won its last 15 games with an offense that leads the Big Ten in numerous categories including runs, hits, home runs, RBIs, total bases, slugging percentage, walks and on-base percentage. Sophomore Billie Andrews has been a force on offense, leading the conference in home runs, runs scored, RBIs and walks. Junior transfer Mya Felder leads the Big Red with a .402 batting average, tallying 40 hits, six doubles, three homers and 26 RBIs. Olivia Ferrell leads in the circle with 15 victories, holding a 2.00 ERA through 115.2 innings. 
 
Minnesota (19-15-1) is 5-4 in conference play. The Gophers are coming off of a 2-1 series win over Iowa. UM opened Big Ten competition at Rutgers, claiming the series 2-1. In week two, the Gophers fell to Illinois, dropping the series, 1-2. Minnesota is coming off of a midweek matchup with South Dakota State where the Gophers picked up the win after a walk-off homer in the eighth inning.

  • The Huskers (10-0) are the only undefeated team in conference play in the Big Ten.

Huskers Head to Hawkeye Invitational

The Nebraska men's golf team returns to action April 16-17 for the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.

The University of Iowa hosts the two-day, 54-hole event at Finkbine Golf Course. The field will tee off on the par-72, 7,157-yard layout at 8:30 a.m. (CT) on Saturday. The 14 teams will play the final round on Sunday with another 8:30 a.m. (CT) start.

Nebraska joins Minnesota and Iowa as Big Ten teams in a 14-team field with a strong Midwestern flavor, including Cincinnati, Creighton, Drake, Illinois State, Iowa State, James Madison, Kansas, Kansas State, Northern Illinois, South Dakota State and UMKC.

Tom Westenberger (Wuppertal, Germany) will lead Nebraska's lineup at Iowa. The senior has been a constant for the Big Red, playing in every lineup for the 2021-22 season. His top finish of the spring season came at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate (March 5-6), where he posted a 220 (+4) to tie for 15th. Seniors Caleb Badura (Aurora, Neb.) and Branden Meyer (Gilbert, Ariz.) will play out of the No. 2 and No. 3 positions for the Huskers. Meyer notched his career-best round late last month with a 69 in the third round at the Seahawk Intercollegiate. Badura finished within the top 25 individually at Desert Mountain by posting a three-round score of 223.

Senior Mark Foelbaek (Jelling, Denmark) and sophomore Gentry Scheve (Emporia, Kan.) round out Nebraska's weekend lineup. Scheve made his first lineup appearance of the spring last weekend at the Stitch Intercollegiate, which was highlighted by his hole-in-one on No. 6 in the opening round. Reed Malleck (York, Neb.) will enter the invitational playing as an individual. The sophomore played as an individual last weekend and put up a one-under-par 71 in the opening round.

Five Huskers Named CGA Regular-Season All-Americans

Five Nebraska men's gymnasts were named Regular-Season All-Americans announced by the College Gymnastics Association on Thursday morning. The gymnasts are comprised of sophomore Taylor Christopulos, juniors Donte McKinney and Sam Phillips, and seniors Charlie Giles and Jake Bonnay.

Jake Bonnay, a native from Ontario, Canada, was named a regular-season All-American on floor for the third year in a row. Bonnay is currently ranked second in the NCAA on floor with a national qualifying average score of 14.140. Bonnay has claimed three event titles on floor this season, with a season-high of 14.50 scored against Air Force and Army on March 12.

Taylor Christopulos, a native from Layton, Utah, was also named a regular-season All-American on vault for a second consecutive year. Christopulos holds the seventh position overall in the NCAA on vault with a national qualifying average of 14.458. Christopulos has pocketed two event titles this season against Michigan on Jan. 29 and Ohio State on March 20, putting up a season-high record of 14.85 against Air Force and Army on March 12. 

Charlie Giles, a native from Lake Zurich, Illinois, was named a regular-season All-American on pommel horse and for a second time on vault. On pommel horse, Giles is ranked second in the NCAA with a national qualifying score of 13.821. The senior collected 4 event titles this season, notching a career-high score of 14.90 against Ohio State on March 20. On vault, Giles is currently ranked third in the NCAA with a national qualifying average of 14.607. Giles notched another career-high with a 15.05 against Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa on March 5. 

Sam Phillips, a native from Woodland Hills, California, was also named a regular-season All-American on two events including floor and high bar. Phillips is currently ranked eighth in the NCAA on floor, with a national qualifying average of 13.557. Phillips claimed two floor titles, scoring his season-high of 14.20 at Rocky Mountain Open on Jan. 15. On high bar, Phillips is ranked seventh with a national qualifying average of 13.279, collecting 2 event titles against Air Force and Army on March 12, and Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa on March 5, where he put up a career-high of 14.10.

Donte McKinney, a native from Fort Bragg, North Carolina, was named a regular-season All-American on high bar. McKinney is currently ranked eighth overall in the NCAA with a national qualifying average of 13.636. McKinney notched his season-high score of 13.95 at the home meet against Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa on March 5.

The Huskers return to competition April 15 for the qualifier round of the NCAA Championships in Norman, Okla. The meet is set to take place at 1 and 7 p.m. CT. The Nebraska men's tennis team is coming off its second conference win last weekend against No. 53 Illinois, 4-2. The Huskers will travel to Indiana for a pair of Big Ten matches this weekend as they battle Purdue and Indiana.

• The Boilermakers enter Saturday's matchup with a 9-10 record, having won six of eight at home this season. They boast a 2-3 conference record.

Hietaranta Continues Strong 2022 Campaign
• Roni Hietaranta started the year off strong, winning his first six singles matches to begin the season with a 6-0 record. Dating back to the fall, he now has 15 total singles wins which marks the most on the team thus far.
• On Jan. 25, Hietaranta was named Big Ten Co-Athlete of the Week after singles wins over Baylor and Oklahoma. He knocked off the No. 54 ranked singles competitor in the nation, defeating Oklahoma's Jordan Hasson, 6-4, 7-5. The Lappeenranta, Finland native also defeated Baylor's Cole Gromley in the No. 6 spot, 6-1, 6-3.
• Three weeks ago, Hietaranta rallied back from a 4-2 hole to knock off Wichita State's Orel Ovil and clinch the victory for the Huskers. He won the singles match against Ovil 6-4, 2-6, 6-4. Last weekend, he knocked off Princeton's Filippos Astreinidis in consecutive sets to push his spring record to 7-3.
• Following a short injury stint, he returned against UCF and won in the No. 6 spot, 6-3, 6-3, to give him eight wins in the spring.
• He currently holds a 2-3 conference record and has victories in matches against Michigan State and Northwestern. He has an 11-6 singles record in the spring.

Maruyama and Huber Rise In The ITA Rankings
• Dario Huber and Shunya Maruyama have won six of their last seven doubles matches, including wins over Michigan, Illinois and Northwestern.
• The jumped up 45 spots this week in the ITA Top-90 Doubles Rankings to the No. 40 slot after going 2-0 this past weekend against two ranked teams.
• In singles play, Maruyama is tied for second on the Huskers with 14 total wins, and he holds a 7-9 spring record. Four of his wins have come in the No. 3 and No. 6 spots.
• He has been victorious in six of his last 12 completed matches, including singles victories in matches against UCF and Cornell.

Lozano Holding Down Back Half Of Lineup
• Victor Moreno Lozano ranks second on the Huskers with nine spring wins, as he holds a 9-5 spring record. Eight of his wins have come in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.
• He has been victorious in eight of his last 12 completed matches, including singles victories in matches against Oregon, Michigan State and Wisconsin.
• He has also competed with Nic Wiedenhorn in the No. 1 spot for doubles, notching back-to-back wins in completed matches against Michigan State and Wisconsin.

Sooner Invitational Up Next for Husker Track and Field

The Nebraska track and field team will head to the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla., for a meet on Friday and Saturday. Friday's action begins for the Huskers at 4:30 p.m. on Friday and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Live results will be available at DeltaTiming.com

Racking Up Weekly Awards
The Huskers have combined for four Big Ten weekly honors already this outdoor season:

• Freshman Jenna Rogers has twice been named Big Ten Women's Field Athlete of the Week (April 6 and 13) for standout high jump performances. Rogers was the Big Ten indoor high jump champion and a first-team All-American after finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships. 
• Darius Luff was the Big Ten Men's Track Athlete of the Week on April 6 after winning the 110-meter hurdles at the Pepsi Florida Relays in 13.70. Luff was a first-team All-American indoors in the 60-meter hurdles after finishing seventh. 
• Mayson Conner was tabbed Big Ten Men's Field Athlete of the Week on April 6 after a high jump clearance of 7-1 (2.16m) at the Pepsi Florida Relays. Conner won the Big Ten indoor high jump title and placed 13th at nationals in March. 

Huskers Moving Up the Charts
A number of Huskers have cracked the all-time Nebraska outdoor top 10 charts through two weeks of the outdoor season:

• Erika Freyhof moved up one spot to No. 2 on the 10,000 meters chart with a new PR of 33:50.38 at the Stanford Invitational. In the same event on the men's side, Ryan Martins ran 29:44.24 to move to No. 6 all-time, and Mark Freyhof set a new best of 30:09.72 to rank ninth in school history.
• Jenna Rogers, the Big Ten indoor high jump champion and a first-team All-American as a freshman, already cracked the outdoor top 10 chart at No. 4 with a best mark of 6-1 1/4 (1.86m) at the John McDonnell Invitational. 
• On opening weekend, Henry Zimmerman bolted up the hammer throw chart to No. 7 with his mark of 207-4 (63.19m).
• Hannah Godwin ran the ninth-fastest 3,000-meter steeplechase in school history (10:39.87) at the John McDonnell Invitational, while Taya Skelton came in at No. 10 (10:46.72). 
• Darius Luff's 110-meter hurdles PR of 13.59 at the John McDonnell Invitational ranks No. 7 in school history. 
• Alex Talley ranks No. 3 in the hammer throw (216-0, 65.84m) and No. 8 in the outdoor shot put (62-10 1/2, 19.16m).
• Till Steinforth scored 7,473 points in the decathlon at the Jim Click Multis, the No. 6 total in school history.
