SIDNEY, Neb. -- A Panhandle town is hoping to infuse its affordable housing efforts with a potential influx of cash.

During the Sidney City Council meeting Tuesday night, the council approved moving forward with applying for an Affordable Housing Trust Fund.

City Manager David Scott began the application process to request a Nebraska Affordable Housing Trust Fund Grant.

Sidney has requested $500,000 and will match $100,000 to the $500,000 if the application is approved. The $500,000 would come from the state fund and the $100,000 matched is from the Sidney fund.

If the application is approved, a total of $600,000 would be used to build two houses for community members. Upon approval, there would be another application for community members to apply for affordable housing living.

In other council business, Ted Sintler was approved to join the planning commission board.

John Glenn, Caleb Sweetser, and Matt Benzel were approved to be reappointed to the planning commission board.

Steve Waller was appointed to The Tree Board.
