OMAHA - For the sixth time in school history, Sidney High School has an all-class gold medal champion.

Following the final races in Classes C and D on Saturday, senior Mitchell Deer learned he had the top time in the 400-meter dash across all classes at the Nebraska School Activities Association State Track and Field Championships in Omaha.

Deer ran a meet best 49.42 to win the Class B state championship on Thursday. His time edged senior Tyson Baker, from Class A Fremont High School, at 49.72 and Connor Wells, Class B St. Paul HIgh School, at 49.77.

The Red Raiders won their fifth Class B state championship with 66 total points, their first since 2015.

Deer is the fifth Sidney track and field athlete to win the all-class gold medal. Jacob Dowse won the all-class gold in high jump last year. Paul Hamilton did it twice in high jump in 2005 and 2006. David King won all-class gold in the 440-yard dash in 1965 and Dale Kinney claimed the all-class gold medal in shot put in 1949.

Xander Provance, of Chadron, earned the all-class gold medal in the 110-meter high hurdeles. He ran his winning time of 14.46 during the Class B meet on Thursday. Provance is the first Chadron all-class gold medal winner since Allen Osborn staked claim in 2008, also in the 110m high hurdles.

The 2006 Chadron girls 4x800m relay team is the schools only other all-class gold medalist.
