County officials warn landowners of suspicious letters
CHEYENNE COUNTY -- County Assessors have seen a repeating pattern with land offer letters from an unfamiliar company.
Cheyenne County Assessor Melody Keller said that she has received calls from land owners in Cheyenne County regarding letters they have been sent in the mail offering a low price for their land.
The company sending the mail is called Vacant Land USA, LLC.
According to Keller, other panhandle counties have received the same letter.
"So far, I have received calls from land owners and so has the Morrill County Assessor and the Box Butte Assessor," Keller said. "One land owner thought the dollar amount listed on the letter was what her valuation was, which is not the case."
Keller said the company is offering a very low purchase price.
"We had a gentleman tell one of my staff members that when he called the company number the person was very pushy and eluded that the property owner should sell to them before the government takes their land," Keller said.
Keller advises land owners to do some research on their own before accepting any offers to purchase their land.
"The company states the source of their information is the Cheyenne County Assessor’s Office," Keller said. "While this is true in some fashion as they are using our website, the Assessor’s Office has not directly provided any information to this company."
The Cheyenne County Assessor’s Office would like to encourage all property owners to either call 308-254-2633 or visit cheyenne.gworks.com for any questions regarding 2022 valuations.
