OGALLALA, Neb, -- A veteran in rural Nebraska was recognized for his service in a special homemade way.

The Quilt of Valor is a handmade quilt awarded to a service member or veteran who has been touched by war.

The quilt is a way of thanking veterans for their service.

On June 21st, Guy Bechtel received the Quilt of Valor.

Bechtel served in World War II from 1943 until 1946 and served in the Asiatic area station in Guam. Bechtel will be 98 this year.

Bechtel’s daughter Kerri Anderson said she learned about the Quilt of Valor a year ago and applied for her father online.

“It’s all about wrapping them in appreciation of their country from which they served,” Anderson said.

Anderson said her dad appreciates the quilt and feels like the honor should be to those who did not make it home after serving.

“That’s the kind of humble guy he is,” Anderson said. “It was nice that he was honored in that fashion.”

Anderson said her dad lost an older brother, whose place was shot down while serving in France.
