SIDNEY, Neb. -- A man is behind bars after reportedly assaulting and injuring a police officer.

On Saturday, around 7:15 p.m. an officer with the Sidney Police Department responded to a woman’s home who said she felt unsafe after 51-year-old, Daryl Kopriva, came to her home cursing at her and making threats.

Kopriva was previously arrested on June 25th for 10 different charges.

SPD said Kopriva returned to his home after the incident and the woman called afraid for her safety.

It was reported that while officers were en route to Kopriva’s home another caller reported that Kopriva was outside throwing household items onto the front yard. Police reported Kopriva threw televisions, dishes, chairs, and jewelry.

Officials said they entered Kopriva’s home and advised him that he was under arrest for disturbing the peace.

The SPD officer said when he walked toward Kopriva and continued to advise him that he was under arrest, Kopriva immediately began to resist arrest by hitting the officer with his arms and fists.

It was reported that the officer said he got Kopriva turned around and shoved onto the kitchen counter where he attempted to arrest Kopriva, but he continued to move his fists, making the arrest a struggle.

Authorities said the officer called for assistance and got one of Kopriva’s wrists into handcuffs. The officer said, with assistance from another officer, they got both handcuffs on Kopriva.

A press release reported Kopriva continued to resist arrest and was placed face down on the floor to prevent him from causing any harm to himself.

Officers reported Kopriva made multiple threats to both officers while resisting arrest. Kopriva allegedly said he was going to kill them multiple times.

It was reported that officers requested Kopriva stand so he could exit the house, but he refused to stand and said the officers would have to carry him out of the house.

At this time, Sidney Police reported that Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office Deputies arrived to assist.

Officers said they lifted Kopriva and began to carry him out of the house and Kopriva resisted by kicking and thrashing.

According to officers, they requested that Kopriva quit kicking and resisting several times, so he wouldn't injure himself or others.

As officers approached the patrol vehicle,  they said Kopriva kicked it multiple times leaving dents.

Officials reported that while attempting to get the rear passenger side door open, Kopriva kicked an officer with great force. They said the officer yelled with pain and fell face first onto the ground.

Other officers at the scene reported they immediately called an ambulance because they didn't know how hurt the officer was.

A press release reported Kopriva was physically placed in the patrol vehicle due to him refusing to stand, walk, or get in the vehicle.

Kopriva was arrested for six counts of terroristic threats, two counts of third-degree assault on an officer, resisting arrest, disturbing the peace, and criminal mischief.
