OGALLALA - The Sidney Girls and Boys Cross Country teams added one more meet to their schedule on Thursday. The NSAA State Cross Country Championships at the Kearney Country Club on October 21st. Both teams finished third at the C-5 District Cross Country Meet yesterday at Crandall Creek Country Club in Ogallala to qualify to compete for the team title next week in Kearney.

“Today was a very challenging day with the weather,” said Sidney Head Cross Country Coach Donna Wiedeburg. “But everyone had to deal with it so we knew we just had to run smart and work hard. The kids ran incredibly great races, and they worked together.”

The Sidney Girls team was paced by two runners in the top-10 to finish behind district champion McCook and runner-up Chadron. Junior Talissa Tanquary ran to a third-place finish and senior Rheo Dykstra came in nineth. McCook (28) easily took the team title with three runners in the top-10. Chadron (45) came in a solid second followed by Sidney (60) and then Cozad (71) in fourth.

A pair of sophomores led the Sidney Boys team to their third-place finish. Jashawn Davenport and Noah Canas crossed the finish line in 14th and 15th place respectively to help send the boys team to next week’s state meet. Gothenburg (17) ran away with the team title, placing four runners in the top-10. Broken Bow (55) finished a distant second followed by Sidney (84) and Ogallala (93) in fourth.

“This is the ninth year in a row that the boys team will be traveling to state as a team and the 3rd year in a row that the girls team has been as a team, says Wiedeburg. “We have a lot of young talent and we are excited for next week as well as the future of the Raider Runners.”
