CHADRON - Several people lost in a Nebraska Panhandle community, because of gusty winds. According to the National Weather Service office in Cheyenne, a 75 mph wind gust was recorded seven miles south of Chadron on Monday.

The Nebraska Public Power District shut off power to the entire community at 2:30 p.m. Monday due to the number of power lines knocked down by gusty winds. Power was expected to be shut off until "further notice." The power outage affected 3,000 customers.

NPPD urged residents to stay off the streets due to the dangers presented by high winds. Reported winds gusts on Monday ranged from 65 to 75 mph.

Approximately 400 people lost power by mid-morning, because of wind. Power was restored approximately an hour later, though more reports of outages followed shortly afterward.

The gusty winds uprooted trees, sent trash cans down streets, and tore part of the roof off at the Chadron Fire Station.

The City of Sidney received a 63 mph wind gust Monday. The Alliance Airport registered a 60 mph wind gust, 50 mph at Gering, and 49 mph at the Scottsbluff and Torrington airports.
