Chadron State gets historic win on Saturday

CHADRON, Neb. -- December 3, 2022 -- The Chadron State College women's basketball team had its largest margin of victory since a 37-point 2010 win over Regis University, on Saturday afternoon in the Chicoine Center. CSC defeated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference opponent New Mexico Highlands University 89-59 to fling its winless streak aside and end the Cowgirls undefeated season.
NMHU entered the game 7-0, with a win Friday night over CSC's conference travel partner, Colorado Christian University. The Eagles were 0-7, coming off a narrow loss to CSU-Pueblo at home. The visitors left town at 7-1 (1-1 RMAC), while the hosts improved to 1-7 (1-1 RMAC).
Two CSC players went off from three-point range. Redshirt freshman Kyra Tanabe was 5-for-7 from downtown en route to a 7-of-10 finish from the floor, while senior Samiyah Worrell hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Eagles as a team were 54.5 percent on the long ball after starting the season at 18.6 percent through six games.
Bucking a recent trend, CSC did not have a large lead early, going up by only four in the first quarter.
The Eagles' surge came in the second, when Worrell was 3-for-4, including a pair of three-pointers, helping the Eagles to lead by as many as 25.
In the second half, CSC continued to shoot the ball well, never leading by less than 16. Tanabe hit all five of her field goal attempts in the final 20 minutes, including three from three-point range, to finish with a game-high 19 points.
Worrell finished at 15 points, while sophomore Ashayla Powers put up 12, and redshirt freshman Claudia Dolliger recorded a career-high 11 points.
For the Cowgirls, guard Juliana Aragon led her team with 16 points and three assists. Post player Neysa Munguia was held to four points, but grabbed nine boards.
Chadron State will be on the road for two more weeks, before a New Year's Eve meeting with MSU Denver at home.
CSC men beat Cowboys for fifth straight win
CHADRON, Neb. -- December 3, 2022 -- Chadron State College Head Coach Shane Paben called it "an ugly win," but the Eagles were victorious for the fifth game in a row by defeating New Mexico Highlands 71-61 Saturday evening on their home court.
The Eagles jumped out to a 19-4 lead in the first 7 minutes and 46 seconds, were ahead 37-29 at halftime and led the rest of the way except for about 70 seconds in the second half when the score was knotted at 44-44 after the Cowboys had completed a 15-3 run.
After Paben "encouraged" his players during a time out, they responded with a 12-2 run to go ahead 56-46 with 9:31 still on the clock. Although Highlands was back within five points with eight minutes showing, The Eagles led by double digits the final five minutes.
While the Eagles did some good things, such as sink 9-of-22 three-point shots and out-rebound the visitors 45-33, Paben said they were not happy with how they played.
"There wasn't a lot of juice in the gym and we didn't play with as much energy as we'll need to have for the second game when we play back-to-back games Friday and Saturday night in our conference," Paben said. "It's something we'll need to improve on, but it's good to be 2-0 in the conference now."
The Eagles also won their RMAC opener 83-71 over Colorado State-Pueblo on Friday night, and are 5-3 for the season.
Chadron State, which shot 43.3% (26-60) from the field, was led in scoring by Isaiah Wyatt and Bryce Latimer with 18 points apiece. Wyatt was seven-of-15 from the field, including four-of-eight on threes. He also tallied 18 points Friday night.
Latimer, who poured in 24 against Pueblo, was 6-of-10 from the field, made one of his three shots from behind the arc, and hit five-of-six charity tosses against Highlands.
Forward Josh Robinson added 10 points and was the game's high rebounder with 11 for the Eagles. Teammates Porter Anderson, Jarrett Taylor and Pat McLachlan all scored six points. Anderson pulled down 10 rebounds.
The Cowboys were led by 6-5 senior Dante Moses, who was nine-of-17 from the field for 18 points and claimed nine rebounds. Jalen Munn contributed 12 points and Tyrell Coleman 11. Eric Sonnerberg, who had seven points, grabbed 10 caroms.
Highlands shot 38.8% (26-67) from the field that included just four-of-24 from behind the arc. The Cowboys missed their first six long range shots before connecting on their first with four minutes left in the opening half.
The Cowboys, who bested Colorado Christian in Lakewood 73-62 Friday night prior to coming to Chadron now 4-4 for the season.
The Eagles will play on the road the next two weeks, beginning Wednesday, when they visit the Christian Cougars. They also play Western Colorado at Gunnison on Friday night, Dec. 9.

CSC's Daniel Reynolds adds eight feet to his weight throw record
SPEARFISH, S.D. -- Chadron State College's Daniel Reynolds got his track and field season off to a great start Saturday.
Competing at Black Hills State's Yellow Jacket Holiday Open Meet, Reynolds threw the 35-pound weight 20.51 meters, which is eight feet and 3 ½ inches farther than his previous best. And, his old mark was both the Chadron State record and is the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's record. Reynolds set those records last year while at the conference meet.
The conference record that Reynolds broke dated back to 2002. His throw Saturday automatically qualifies him for the National Indoor Championships this coming February.
Reynolds also won the shot put at the Yellow Jacket Meet with a mark of 50-10 ¾. He's a junior from Granby, Colo. He also set Chadron State's hammer throw record last spring.
Chadron State had three other double winners Saturday. Among them was Kyla Sawvell, who swept the women's shot put and weight throw events. Although this is her final year of collegiate eligibility, it was her first meet while wearing an Eagles' uniform.
Previously, Sawvell was a standout for the Black Hills State, where her exploits included winning 10 throwing championships at RMAC meets. She switched to Chadron State this fall because it has a graduate program in sports management. Her winning marks Saturday were 46-10 in the shot and 61-3 in the hammer. They rank ninth and fifth best on CSC's all-time lists.
The other double winners are Carlie Collier of Mullen in the 60 and 200 meters. She ran the 60 in 7.82 seconds, seventh best all-time at CSC, and her 200 time of 25.68 seconds is fifth.
The third Chadron State woman to win two events Saturday is freshman Megan Baloun, a 2022 graduate of Steven High School in Rapid City. She won the long and triple jumps.
Other Eagles who were event winners are Kassyl of Gordon in the 400, Jourdaine Cerenil of Pine Bluffs, Wyo., in the high jump and Madison Clause, a freshman from Billings, Mont., in the pole vault.
Five Chadron State men besides Reynolds won events Saturday. They are Nigeria native Quincy Efeturi, 200; freshman Kyland Fuller of Fort Laramie, Wyo., 800; Creighton Trembly of Longmont, Colo., 60 hurdles; Emory Yoosook of Casper, long jump; and freshman James Bruner of Scottsbluff, high jump.
CSC's 4x400 relay comprised of Osvaldo Cano, Cameryn Spence, Harley Rhoades and Logan Peila won that event.
