SIDNEY -- Voters returned Brad Sherman to the Sidney City Council for a second term. The seated council then elected Sherman for a two-year term as mayor.

Sherman's experience as mayor is the second half of the new council's first meeting. The elected council members were sworn into office Wednesday, December 14. The December 13 meeting was delayed due to weather. The procedure when a council is elected is for the current council to be adjourned and the new council members sworn into office.

The city attorney then acts as chairman of the council for nomination and vote of a new mayor and vice-mayor. Sherman was nominated as mayor and Roger Gallaway as vice-mayor. Gallaway sought the two-year seat on the council in an unopposed race.

Sherman said this isn't the first time he was considered for mayor.

"Roger (Gallaway) asked me two years ago if I was interested," he said.

He said he declined the offer because he didn't think he had time. He sees the mayor as available for community activities and signature on legal documents.  He said he has learned a lot about the duties of mayor seated Gallaway. In addition, directions included by City Clerk Lori Borchert help adjusting to the position.

He said Gallaway deserved his two terms as mayor because of the knowledge and experience of Sidney he has.
