SIDNEY – For the fourth time in five years the Sidney Lady Raiders lost a subdistrict title game as the top seed on their home floor. And for the fifth year in a row, the Scottsbluff Bearcats are the B-8 Subdistrict Champs. The Bearcats stymied the Lady Raiders for a 57-46 win at the Cabela’s Athletic Facility Tuesday afternoon. Both teams have a chance to qualify for next week’s state tournament with a win on Saturday in a District Final.

Sidney sophomore Jordan DeNovellis got Sidney off to a good start off the bench with seven first quarter points as the Lady Raiders led 13-11 at the first break. But Sidney’s last lead of the game came with 2:54 to go in the half on a DeNovellis driving shot over Scottsbluff’s Anna Kelly for a 24-23 Lady Raider lead. The Bearcat’s 2-1-2 zone, with 6’1” junior Paige Horne guarding the middle, thwarted Sidney’s attempts to attack the basket. Bearcat senior Payton Burda made a free throw and a three pointer to close out Scottsbluff’s first half scoring to send the Cats into halftime with a 27-25 advantage.

Although Sidney stayed close and even tied the game late in the third period, the Lady Raiders never regained the lead. An old adage in basketball says you should make more free throws than your opponent shoots. The Bearcats made 12 of their 16 free throws in the second half alone as Sidney shot only 11 free throws in the game. For maybe the first time all year, the Lady Raiders were outscored in three consecutive quarters to fall to 23-2 on the season.

Reese Riddle led the Lady Raiders with 19 points while Jordan DeNovellis finished with 12 points. The Bearcats were paced by Paige Horne’s 13 points while Anna Kelly and Payton Burda each added 12 points.
