CEDAR RAPID, Iowa – March 11, 2023 – Quentrevion Campbell fell in the 133-pound National Championship match during the final day of the NCAA Division II National Championships, finishing as the national runner-up and an All-American Saturday.

Campbell, a redshirt junior from Tifton, Georgia, is the highest placing wrestler Chadron State has had since head coach Brett Hunter won a national title in 2009.

"Obviously you want to see Quen winning and bring the NCAA Championship home, but it wasn't our day," Hunter said. "Quen had one of the most impressive seasons in CSC history, Chadron State College should be proud of his effort."

Gavin Quiocho, the #3 ranked 133-pounder, was Campbell's opponent in the championship match and the eventual national champion.

Quicho knocked off the 6th and 7th ranked wrestlers on his way to the title match.

In the championship, Quiocho scored an early takedown but it did not take Campbell long to earn an escape. After choosing to start bottom in the second period, Campbell scored another escape, tying the score at two entering the final period.

Quiocho would follow in Campbell's footsteps, also choosing bottom position. An escape for the Glenville State wrestler gave him a 3-2 lead.

Campbell kept shooting which led to a second stalling call for his opponent, tying the match at three.

Quiocho held more than a minute of riding time though and Campbell was unable to score another point, ending the match 4-3 in the opponents favor.

Quiocho, who finished his season with a 42-5 record, was the first All-American and first National Champion in Glenville State wrestling history.

Campbell's route to the championship match included two decisions and a major decision.

After winning with two decisions in round one and the quarterfinals, Campbell started his day with a 15-5 major decision in the semifinals.

His opponent, Devin Flannery of Millersville, was the #5 ranked 133-pounder in the nation and had a record of 34-6.

After holding a 2-1 lead at the end of period one, Flannery earned an escape to tie the match at two with 1:46 left in the period two.

Campbell managed a takedown with 1:01 remaining and followed it up with four near-fall points. Campbell would add more near-fall points and a takedown in the final period to earn the major decision.

Campbell, who finished with a 21-2 record this season, is the 49th All-American wrestler at Chadron State College.

Eagles drop two to MSU-Denver

DENVER, Colo. -- March 11, 2023 -- The Metro State University Roadrunners held Chadron State to six combined hits in two games on Saturday, defeating the Eagles 3-1 and 8-0, respectively,

The losses drop CSC to 6-15 overall and 4-10 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. The Roadrunners improve to 17-6 overall and 14-0 in conference play.

In game one, two homeruns resulted in three of the games four runs.

In the bottom of the 2nd, a Jaiden Geist single scored Hannah DiFabio, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Leadoff batter Kami Grammerstorf singled to start the third inning for the Roadrunners. Alexia Boring brought Grammerstorf home with a two-run home run, giving MSU-Denver a 3-0 lead.

Scoring was halted until the top of the seventh inning. CSC would have to score three runs to force the hosts to bat.

With one out, Mackenzie Kroll, a junior from Brighton, Colorado, hit a solo homerun to left field. CSC's following batter was walked but the Eagles were unable to add any more runs, falling 3-1.

Kroll and Sloane Quijas, a senior from Erie, Colorado, were the only two Eagles to record a hit in the loss. Jenna Medhus pitched the complete game victory, improving her record to 8-2 overall.

Medhus allowed two hits and one run, walked three batters and struck out seven.

Tori Haug received the loss for CSC. In six innings, the Junior from Commerce City, Colorado, allowed seven hits and three runs, while striking out six batters.

In game two, MSU-Denver took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.

Kroll responded with a leadoff triple to start the second inning for CSC, but was called out trying to score on an Addison Spears sacrifice fly.

After the hosts scored two more runs in the bottom of the second, Chadron State found themselves with the bases loaded in the top of the third.

The bases being loaded caused the Roadrunners to switch pitchers. Cheyenne Prieto entered the game and forced CSC to ground into a double play.

Trailing 4-0 heading to the top of the fifth, CSC had a runner advance to third base but were unable to score a run.

The Roadrunners scored three runs to take a 7-0 lead before receiving an out in the bottom of the fifth. After two consecutive outs, a single down the right field line would bring Prieto home to score and end the game 8-0 in five innings.

Both teams called on relief pitchers in game two. The Roadrunners relief, Prieto, would receive the win. Delaney Farnsworth received the loss for CSC.

Both teams are scheduled for another double header tomorrow, March 12, at 11 a.m.

Eagles’ Kyla Sawvell is bronze medalist in shot put at National Meet

VIRGINIA BEACH, Virg. -- March 11, 2023 -- Chadron State College senior Kyla Sawvell became a double All-American at the 2023 NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championship on Saturday at Virginia Beach, Va., by placing third in the shot put and claiming the bronze medal.

She also was fifth in the 20-pound weight throw on Friday for her first All-American honor at the meet.

Sawvell saved her best for last in the shot put.  Her best throw of 15.34 meters was on her sixth and final attempt.  Her mark converts to 50 feet, 4 inches on the English scale.

Prior to her final throw, her best was 48-2 ½, and it would not have placed among the top eight and led to All-American honors in the shot.

Sawvell also was the bronze medalist in the shot put at the 2021 Indoor Nationals while she was attending Black Hills State at Spearfish, S.D.  Her third-place mark that year was 49-4 ¼.

After competing four years at Black Hills State, Sawvell transferred to Chadron State last fall to enroll in a graduate program that will enable her to become an athletic trainer.  She had the additional year of eligibility because the 2020 indoor season was declared null and void after the national meet was cancelled and no outdoor season took place because of COVID 19.

She also will compete for the Eagles during the outdoor season that will begins later this month.  She won 10 gold medals in the throws at Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Meets at Black Hills State, and added another this winter when she won the weight throw two weeks ago while wearing the Eagles' uniform.

In addition, she was the silver medalist in the shot at the 2023 RMAC Meet.  The winner of that competition was Katherine Higgins of Colorado State-Pueblo.   On Saturday, Higgins finished second in the shot put at nationals with a mark of 51-3 ½.  The winner was Trista Fintel of Findlay University in Ohio at 52-7 ½.

Sawvell was the only contestant to place in both the weight throw and the shot put at this year's National Meet.

Her fifth-place mark in the weight throw measured 19.88 meters, or 65-2 ¾.  The Eagles' Daniel Reynolds of Granby, Colo., also was fifth in the men's 35-pound weight throw Friday at 20.45 meters, or 67-1 ¼.
