Barbara was born on February 6, 1953 to Albert and Helen (Hitchcock) Higginson in Palmer Lake, Colorado, the youngest of four children. The family moved to Colorado Springs when she was a year old, where she attended school graduating in 1971 from Wasson High School. She attended the University of Northern Colorado, receiving her Bachelors in Elementary Education in 1973.
She was hired as a “temporary” teacher with Sidney Public Schools in 1975. That “temporary” position lasted 40 years until her retirement in 2015. Barbara was loved by her students.
Her faith was the sustaining aspect in her life. She was active in the Evangelical Free Church in Sidney. Barbara saw a need for socialization for the single women of the church and started the single ladies group. She served as a Deaconess and volunteered in the nursery. Second only to her faith and love of teaching Barbara was, in her words, a crazy Denver Broncos fan.
Barbara is survived by her sister Ann Drake and her husband Michael; nieces Lisa Drake and Andrea Stewart; nephews Matthew Drake and his wife Ellen and Travis Higginson and his wife Erika; and numerous cousins.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents Helen and Albert, and her two brothers Vyrl and Paul.
