The Nebraska softball team (26-12, 6-3 Big Ten) shut out Maryland in the series opener on Friday night in College Park. The Huskers held the Terrapins (26-11, 3-6 Big Ten) scoreless for only the second time this season as the Big Red claimed the 3-0 victory. 

Katelyn Caneda got the Huskers on board with an RBI double in the first inning while Brooke Andrews recorded her sixth home run in 10 games with a two-run shot in the fourth. Billie AndrewsAva Bredwell and Abbie Squier all added singles to lead the NU offense. 

Sydney Lewis and Kiley Goff led the Terrapin offense, both recording two hits on the night. Trin Schlotterback added the only extra-base hit for Maryland, hitting a double in the bottom of the second inning. 

Courtney Wallace moved to 17-7 on the season after pitching the final four innings of the game. Wallace held Maryland to one hit while striking out four. Sarah Harness started the game for the Big Red, pitching the first three innings, holding the Terrapins to four hits while striking out three. 

Courtney Wyche (12-5) recorded the loss for Maryland. Wyche pitched the complete game, giving up five hits and striking out five. 

Billie Andrews led off the first inning with a walk. She scored after Caneda doubled to give Nebraska an early 1-0 lead. 

The Terrapins reached scoring position with two hits in the bottom of the second. Lewis led off with a single. Harness followed with two strikeouts. Schlotterbeck hit a double, putting runners at second and third. However, a fly out stranded two runners for Maryland as Nebraska maintained the 1-0 lead. 

Nebraska added two runs in the fourth inning. Mya Felder led off with a walk. Brooke Andrews followed with a two-run homer, extending the Husker lead to 3-0. 

Maryland threatened with two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the fourth. Wallace entered the game, giving up a lead off single to Lewis. Lewis advanced to third on an NU fielding error as Amelia Lech went to second. Three straight outs kept the Terrapins scoreless through four. 

The Terrapins reached scoring position in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Lech was walked, advancing to second on a wild pitch. The Huskers stranded the runner with a fly out, holding Maryland scoreless through six innings. 

In the bottom of the seventh, the Terrapins looked to make a late rally. With one out, a walk gave Maryland the first baserunner of the inning. A sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. A two-out walk brought the tying run to the plate, but a pop up secured the 3-0 shutout win for the Huskers. 

The Huskers return to action Saturday, April 8, for game two of a three-game series at Maryland. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. (CT), and the game will be streamed live on BTN+ (subscription required). Game Notes

  • Brooke Andrews smashed her sixth homer in 10 games in the top of the fourth inning. The home run brings her total this season to 10 (a career-best for Andrews). 
  • With her 17th win, Courtney Wallace matched her career-best for wins in a season. Wallace also recorded 17 wins during the 2022 season. 
  • The Huskers recorded their 10th shutout of the season tonight. This marks the most shutouts in a season since Nebraska had 18 in 2014.

Nebraska Defeats Indiana, 5-2

Lincoln, Neb. – The No. 47 ranked Nebraska men's tennis team (11-7, 3-2 Big Ten) defeated the No. 75 Indiana men's tennis team (12-9, 1-3 Big Ten) 5-2 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center on Friday night.

The Huskers got off to a strong start in doubles play, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. Indiana grabbed the first doubles match on Court 1 with Patrick Fletchall and Ilya Tiraspolsky defeating William Gleason and Leo Linquet 6-4. NU bounced back though, with Calvin Mueller and Lars Johann picking up the win on Court 2 6-4 over Sam Landau and Luc Boulier.

The Huskers clinched the point on Court 3 with Roni Hietaranta and Shunya Maruyama defeating Luka Vukovic and Ekansh Kumar 6-4.

The Huskers continued that strong play into singles action with Nic Wiedenhorn defeating Ekansh Kumar 6-2, 7-5 on Court 6 to go up 2-0. Hietaranta followed with a match win of his own on Court 1, defeating Fletchall 6-4, 6-4 to get the Huskers within one point of the team victory.

Linquet clinched the win for the Huskers with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Vukovic on Court 2.

The teams agreed to play out the remaining matches, with Indiana picking up a point on Court 4 with Tiraspolsky beating Johann 7-6 (7-2), 7-5. Nebraska moved the lead to 5-1 with Mueller winning 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 on Court 5 over Jagger Saylor. The final point of the night went to Indiana as Landau defeated Maruyama 6-0, 5-7, 1-0 (13-11).

The match brought out 133 fans, the largest crowd of the season for the Big Red. The Huskers' final home match of the season is on Sunday, April 9, against Purdue. Nebraska will also be honoring graduate student William Gleason, who will play in his final home match as a Husker.

Steinforth Secures Decathlon Title at Jim Click Shootout

Till Steinforth captured the decathlon title on Friday at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz., behind six event wins and nine personal-best performances. 

After winning three decathlon events on Thursday, Steinforth opened Friday with a decathlon 110m hurdles victory with a 14.52. Steinforth pitched in another personal-best performance in the pole vault, clearing 16-0 3/4 (4.90m) to win it, moving him up to first in the overall decathlon standings with two events remaining. 

In the javelin, Steinforth threw for 181-2 (55.22m) to gather his sixth win. Steinforth covered the track in 4:52.50 during the 1500m to cap off his 10 events and secure the title. Steinforth's 7,845 points is the fourth-best in school history and the second-best in the nation this season.

Kolby Heinerikson threw for 121-10 (37.14m) in the decathlon discus to place second and tied his pole vault personal-best, finishing fifth with a 14-9 (4.50m). In the javelin, Heinerikson finished third with a mark of 171-0 (52.12m). He wrapped up the decathlon with 6,753 points, finishing fourth in the standings.

Favour Wanjoku leaped 18-8 1/2 (5.70m) in the heptathlon long jump to finish fifth. Kerrigan Myers was NU's top finisher in the heptathlon javelin, throwing for 99-2 (30.23m) to place 10th. Scholl produced the fastest 800m time for the Huskers with a 2:38.68 to close out the heptathlon. 

At the conclusion of all seven events, Madi Scholl tallied 4,862 points to finish 11th in the heptathlon standings.

After two days of multis, the remainder of the team is set to compete tomorrow. Field events begin at 3 p.m. (CT) and running events start at 7:20 p.m. (CT).

Huskers Fall to Buckeyes

Columbus, Ohio - The No. 65 Nebraska women's tennis team (13-6, 2-4 Big Ten) dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 8 Ohio State (14-5, 6-0 Big Ten) on Friday afternoon at the Auer Tennis Center. 
 
The match began with doubles play. On Court 3, Anfisa Danilchenko and Lucy Loy fell to Irina Cantos Siemers and Kathleen Jones, 6-1. Ohio State secured the overall doubles point as Isabel Adrover Gallego and Ana Carmen Zamburek dropped a hard-fought battle against Shelly Bereznyak and Sydni Ratliff on Court 2, 6-4. Raphaëlle Lacasse and Samantha Alicea battled on Court 1, and the teams were tied 5-5 before the match was called. 
 
With Nebraska down by one, the match continued with singles play. In the No. 6 spot, Loy was defeated by Willson, 6-1, 6-0. Danilchenko fell to Lucia Marzal on Court 4, 6-1, 6-1, putting Ohio State within one point of victory. OSU grabbed the overall win on Court 5 when Lacasse fell to Kollie Allen, 6-3, 6-1. The match concluded with unfinished matches on Courts 1, 2 and 3.

Huskers Secure Spot in Regional Championship

Pittsburgh, Pa. - The Nebraska bowling team dominated its first day of the 2023 NCAA Regional Tournament with a 2-0 record to advance to the regional championship finals. The Huskers defeated Mercyhurst and Duquesne to claim the spot in tomorrow's finals for a chance to return to the National Championship in Las Vegas, Nev. 

The Huskers came out strong, starting the day with their first mega-match against Mercyhurst winning 2-0. In the traditional-style match, Anna Callan led the team with a dominant score of 258. Crystal Elliott, followed close behind with 235 and Kendyl Hofmeister (204), Jillian Martin (182) and Kayla Verstraete (170) rounded out the team with a total winning score of (1,049-914). In the baker-style match, NU used scores of 190, 205, 192, 201 and 225 to win and advance in the winner's bracket to face regional host Duquesne.  

In Nebraska's second mega-match of the day, the Huskers came out swinging again with a win (1,040-882) in the traditional format. Senior Crystal Elliott led the Huskers with 227. Kayla Verstraete and Kendyl Hofmeister followed closely behind with Verstraete at 214 and Hofmeister at 213. Anna Callan provided a 206, and Jillian Martin shot 180. With the win, the Huskers moved into the baker match and battled through every game against the Dukes. NU used games of 188, 176, 195, 152 and 228 to claim the overall match win. 

The Big Red returns to the lanes tomorrow at 2 p.m. CT for the Regional Championship match, where the winner will advance to the 2023 NCAA Bowling Championships.
