Fire destroys RV camper at Sidney gas station
SIDNEY, Neb. -- A 1965 Dodge RV camper went up in flames at a Sidney, Neb. gas station Monday morning.
The fire happened in the parking lot of the Maverik truck stop in Sidney.
Assistant Fire Chief Ron Leal said the fire was contained quickly, and there were no injuries or damages to nearby structures.
He said that doesn't mean responses to vehicle fires are without risks.
"Any time you have a vehicle fire, there's a ton of different types of explosions that can happen," Leal said.
Loud "pops" could be heard coming from inside the camper during the blaze. Cheyenne County Sheriff Adam Frerichs said the sounds are suspected to be live rounds of ammunition.
Smoke from the fire could be seen as far as downtown Sidney.
Leal said the fire remains under investigation, and no cause has been officially determined.
The camper is considered a total loss.
