On July 21, Larimer County, Colo. deputies encountered a black Chevrolet truck with a stolen license plate and followed the vehicle south on Highway 287 toward Loveland.

The driver sped away from deputies, so tire spikes were deployed. A StarChase was also used, which allows deputies to track a fleeing vehicle from a distance.

Deputies stopped pursuing and followed the truck from afar until they reached an area with less traffic. They tried to contact the vehicle again at Larimer County Road 8 and CR 21. Despite traveling on a shredded tire, the suspect refused to stop and continued driving. Deputies deployed tire spikes for a second time, then ultimately used a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) to stop the truck at Yellowstone Road and North 115th Street in Boulder County.

The driver then got out of the vehicle and ran away. Deputies caught up to him after a short distance and safely took him into custody.

The suspect was identified as Colten Smith, 26, of Merino, Colorado. He had two existing felony failure to comply warrants from Logan County and is a suspect from a vehicle pursuit that occurred in June. Smith had user amounts of fentanyl in his possession at the time of his arrest, and the truck was determined to be stolen.

After being cleared by medical personnel, Smith was booked into the Larimer County Jail on the following charges:
* Possession of Stolen Property - 2nd Degree Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft (F4)
* Vehicular Eluding - 2 counts (F5)
* Unlawful Possession of Fentanyl (Drug Misdemeanor 1)
* Obstructing a Peace Officer (M2)
* 3rd Degree Criminal Trespass - Agricultural (M3)
* Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (Drug Petty Offense)
* Theft - less than $300 (Petty Offense)
* Driving Under Restraint (Traffic Infraction)

He was issued a $500 cash bond by Judge Rengel. He is also being held on a no-bond warrant and $30,000 cash/surety bond issued by Logan County.
