Oktoberfest car show draws 144 registrations, including father and son duo from near Denver
SIDNEY - Steve Llewellyn, and his son Skyler, packed their 1936 Ford Two-Door Sedan Street Rod and 1966 Plymouth Satellite in a covered trailer at their home south of Denver at around 4 a.m. Saturday and hit the road for Sidney to compete in the 2023 Rod & Roll Car Show for the first time in 26 years.
Steve, who runs an auto repair shop in Franktown, Colo., has owned his street rod ever since he got into restoring cars when he was 32-years-old, a trait he picked up from his dad, who restored seven to eight cars while Steve was growing up.
"My dad was into restoring cars," Steve said. "I grew up with that. I didn't get interested until about 26-years-ago and I'm 58-years-old now. It took off."
The Ford Sedan Street Rod has won 12 trophies and 40 plaques at car shows across the region. Steve says they were glad to be back at the annual Oktoberfest car show and can't wait to return again next fall.
"Just the people, the environment, the cars and relaxing," Steve said. "Just sitting here relaxing for four to six hours, visiting with the same type of people we hang out with in the car shows. It's real enjoyable."
Steve adds the neat thing about a car show is you don't usually see the same kind of car all the time, especially if you go to different shows in different areas.
Skyler has started to closely follow in his dad's footsteps and hopes to, one day, run the family business.
"I wasn't sure what I wanted to do after college," Skyler said. "He owns an auto repair shop. I went to school for business management and I wanted to own my own business at some point. Things I was doing wasn't working out. He said, 'You can take the business over.' That's kind of where I'm working at. He's going to retire in about two years."
If time allows, Skyler would eventually like to restore his own vehicle one day.
144 cars registered for this year's Cruise 'n Class Rod & Roll Car Show on a sunny, 70-degree day at Legion Park in Sidney on Saturday.
