Ybarra sentenced to three years for child abuse
SIDNEY -- Bret Ybarra, 25, was sentenced to 36 months with the Nebraska Department of Corrections on two counts of Child Abuse (Class IIIA felony).
Sentences for both charges are to run consecutively.
On May 25, 2023, charges of Child Abuse (Class II Felony), and Strangulation (Class IIA Felony) were filed against Bret Ybarra.
On April 16, 2024, he was sentenced by Judge Derek Weimer, with William Tangemann of the Nebraska Attorney General's Office prosecuting the case.
In a complaint filed May 25, 2023, Ybarra is accused of "cause or permit a minor child to 1) placed in a situation that endangered his/her life or physical or mental health or 2) cruelly confined or punished, or 3) deprived of necessary food, clothing, shelter, or care, thereby resulting in serious bodily injury ..." between Nov. 7, 2022 and Feb. 23, 2023.
The complaint also accuses Ybarra of "knowingly and intentionally cause or permit a minor child to be: 1) placed in a situation that endangered his physical or mental health or 2) cruelly punished, 3) deprived of necessary food, clothing, shelter, or care, resulting in serious bodily injury" between Jan. 1, 2022 and March 29, 2022.
The third accusation is that Ybarra "knowingly and intentionally 1) impeded the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of another person by applying pressure on the throat or neck of the other person or 2) impede the normal breathing of another person by covering the mouth and nose of the person" between March 1 and March 29, 2022.
