SIDNEY -- This week celebrates public transportation in Sidney and in Nebraska.

Sidney Transportation Director Kasey Kantor said the week celebrates the availability of public transportation and its importance to the community.

"We're on our 10th year of Public Transit Week. I think Sidney has done it every year. Its just where we go out and celebrate transit. We celebrate our drivers. We celebrate our passengers ... just that Nebraska has such a good transit system, and we're able to have it here in Sidney too," said Sidney Transportation Director Kasey Kantor.

He said Sidney's buses were given a new look in recent years, a look that should be drawing attention.

"We've done some more wraps with our buses and I think that has definitely stood out to make people realize that we are still around, and getting them to realize that we're not just the 'handi-bus' anymore. We do rides for small children and we do a lot of rides for younger adults to work. We do hospital rides. A lot of truck drivers when they break down on the Interstate will use us, so we're a multi-tool that Sidney has to use for anything that they need," Kantor said.

He said Sidney's public transportation is an on-demand system offering curb-to-curb service.

"You give us a call. We come right to your front door. You jump on the bus and we take you anywhere in the city limits and drop you off wherever you need to go," he said.

The week will have specials each day. Wednesday is sponsored by Walmart, Thursday is buy one scan pass, get one half off, and Friday is sponsored by Sidney Regional Medical Center.

"Sidney Regional Medical Center will be doing a Free Ride Friday on April 26 for the Public Transit Week that we've worked with Kasey Kantor on," said David Fritz of Sidney Regional Medical Center.
