KIMBALL -- The Kimball Public Library is bringing a fun, education sourdough workshop to the Kimball community this week.

The library is partnering with Western Nebraska Community College to host the one-time sourdough workshop called Love Your Guts. It will be on May 4 from 1-3 p.m. and is taught by WNCC instructor Bobbi Kuhlman.

Everyone will need to bring their own bowl, mixing utensil, a quart or pint jar, and flour.

Kuhlman will teach the group how to make a loaf of sourdough that they will take home to bake. They will also learn how to make their own sourdough starter to save and continue to feed to make more sourdough in the future.

Kuhlman will also teach the group about gut health and how it relates to your body, brain function and mental health.

Kuhlman is a full-time police officer and mother who just wanted to learn more about her gut health. She did her own research and learned from others who taught themselves, so she says it’s nice to be able to pay it forward by sharing it with other people.

“Sourdough is good for your microbiome which benefits everything,” Kuhlman says. “True sourdough is fermented and has a lot of prebiotics and probiotics. it has all kinds of stuff that really feeds the good gut bacteria and pushes out the bad gut bacteria.”

Librarian Amelia Shada says the library collaborates with WNCC to offer fun opportunities to the adult community members.

“This gives us more things to offer to our community that they might not get offered somewhere else, and it helps build our community at the library,” Shada says.

Go to the Kimball Public Library to register and pay a $30 fee. The proceeds go to WNCC.
