LAKE MCCONAUGHY, Neb. - Despite severe weather, including reports of tornados, that tore through the north side of Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area on Thursday, the park will remain open, with all campsites available, during the Memorial Day weekend.

"The most of that tornado damage was east of Lemoyne," WeatherEye Meteorologist Mike Karow said. "The fire department reporting as much as 22 buildings were destroyed and that did included some outbuildings and shops. It was a very destructive tornado on the north shore of Lake McConaughy."

Keystone-Lemoyne Fire & Rescue performed rescues for people trapped in basements. No injuries were reported. The fire department also reported 39 homes were damaged and two campers destroyed in the storm. Numerous power lines and trees were down Friday morning.

Visitors should be aware trees are down across the entire north shore and crews will be working all weekend to remove them, according to the Nebraska Game and Parks Department. Game and parks said power was out at Lone Eagle and Sandy Beach campgrounds, but was expected to be restored by midday Friday.

Some beach access is limited as a few areas washed out in the storm. The fish-cleaning station at Cedar View was damaged and is out of order.

Karow says two other brief tornadoes touched down in Keith County: one southwest of Brule and another one east of Lewellen.

"Quite a few hail reports," Karow said. "Areas like Oshkosh got hail up to an inch and a half in diameter. In-and-around Keith County, hail about two and three quarters was the largest hail near the Ogallala vicinity."

Southeast Garden County received three-quarters of an inch of rain, according to Karow. Keith County saw anywhere between a half to three-quarters of an inch of rain.

Lake Ogallala also opened Friday despite having downed tree limbs.

The highways to both Keith County state recreation areas were temporarily closed Thursday night, but have since reopened.

Game and parks reminds visitors to be mindful of the weather forecast as well as clean-up crews.

Karow says there is a chance for isolated storms for Saturday afternoon and evening. The more widespread severe weather will in Kansas and Oklahoma. Temperatures are expected to be in the 70s with mainly sunny skies through the weekend around Lake Mac.
