GERING – The Gering community is busy with an event more than a century in the making.

The Oregon Trail Days Celebration, in its second day, started this morning with the Don Childs Memorial 5K Run.

“This is the 103rd years of the Oregon Trail Celebration. It’s a big deal in Gering. We’ve got lots of fun things going on. This morning we had the Kiddie Parade, which is one of my personal favorites. We’re standing here in the Civic Center, in front of the door that goes into the art show. Vera Dulaney started the art show years ago in the old Safeway building and we’ve just continued,” said Crystal Sandberg.

The Vera Dulaney Memorial Art Show & Sale opened its doors at 9 a.m. The Oregon Trail Days Kiddie Parade entertained children and adults alike at 10 a.m. followed by games in Legion Park.

Tonight a Rod and Custom Car Show was held from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., concurrently with an International Food Fair and Oregon Trail Days Carnival at Five Rocks Amphitheater.

Saturday starts with the Bicycle Hill Climb at Scotts Bluff National Monument at 7 a.m. Mud Volleyball begins at 9 a.m. The craft fair also opens at 9 a.m. at Legion Park, as will the Vera Dulaney Memorial Art Show & Sale at the Gering Civic Center.

The day continues with Chili Tasting at 3 p.m., the carnival opening at 5 p.m. and Beer & Wine Tasting at 6:30 p.m. at the Oregon Trail Ballpark.

Sunday starts with a Pickleball Tournament at 9 a.m. at the Oregon Trail Park Pickleball Courts, followed by the Panhandle Quilt Guilt Regional Quilt Show at the Gering Middle School, and the carnival from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.
