DALTON -- At about 1:30 p.m. today, July 28, Dalton firefighters responded to a report of smoke northwest of Dalton.

Units from Broadwater, Sidney Rural Fire Protection District, Potter and Gurley were called for mutual aid. 

The grass fire was west of U.S. 385 near Cheyenne County Road 105 and 58.

At about 3:30 p.m., Dalton firefighter Gerred Berner estimated about 500 acres were burned. About 30 minutes later, the fire grew to an estimated 700 acres. 

Members of the Potter and Sidney Volunteer Fire Departments were working side by side at the mutual aid fire near the Greenwood Ranch northwest of Dalton. Firefighters were at the bottom of the canyon when two planes called in to drop retardant on the fire. 

Cause of the fire has not been determined at this time.
