KIMBALL -- The Kimball Police Department has two K9’s in training, which are approaching completion, after which they will train with their partners.

Trudy and Lucy are both a little over one year old, and are training in Casper, Wyoming with Ragnar Defense.

Trainer at Ragnar Defense Josh Pike said when they receive puppies, they are too young to do imprinting, so they socialize them out in public and get them used to people. When the puppies are 8 months old, the trainers start the imprinting process with narcotics.

Pike said how it works is they give the dog a single narcotic and have them carry it in their mouths for a certain duration of time to be imprinted on it, then they work on the dog’s alert by using boxes. Once their alert is formed, they move to vehicle and building searches.

Trudy – being a dual-purpose dog – has completed her apprehension work which involved bite development and training to build her drive to perform apprehensions safely.

Both dogs have been imprinted with narcotics and are currently in narcotic training.

Officer Logan Luft has been assigned to Trudy, and they are set to begin their partner training in early September. They will complete 80-90 hours of training together.

Chief of Police Jose Ruiz says Sgt. Jose Barboza will be Lucy's partner.
