SIDNEY - Case Schoening possessed what he called “big strong muscles” and had a boundless sense of possibility. His big “Case hugs” and repeated “I love you’s" made countless friends and ensured everyone felt loved and appreciated.

That kind of impact from the late five-year-old Sidney boy will be felt for years to come through a new scholarship that will provide support and opportunities for young children who believe they can do anything.

Case's parents, Brooke and Bryan Schoening, and his big sister Zella, announced this month the "Case Schoening Memorial Preschool Scholarship" will cover the full cost of preschool tuition for one selected recipient each year enrolling in the Early Learning Program at Sidney Public Schools.

"We felt since preschool age is such a crucial developmental period in a child’s life, supporting early education can have a significant and lasting impact," Brooke said. "By investing in this foundational stage, we aim to foster growth and development, set the stage for future academic success, and provide children with a strong start that can benefit them throughout their educational journey and beyond."

The scholarship was established in memory of Case, a member of the Sidney Class of 2037, who passed away in an accident in March 2024. He attended Sidney's Early Learning Program for two years with a teacher, Brooke and Bryan say, was "one of the most influential people in his life and one of his biggest fans."

"We felt this was a great way to honor Case’s legacy," Bryan said. "He was a huge fan of the Red Raiders and loved school, Central Elementary in particular."

Brooke and Bryan created the scholarship as a way to give back to a community that means a great deal to them and help more students have the same positive experience Case did. They said the community has helped provide emotional encouragement, practical help during difficult times and a sense of belonging and solidarity.

"Our community has been a source of strength and resilience, helping us to navigate challenging times," Brooke and Bryan said. "It’s not possible to put into words how grateful we are to this entire community and the support that was poured out, from our closest family & friends to complete strangers."

Families interested in applying for the scholarship must complete an application before Sept. 1, 2024. For more information, and to access a scholarship application, contact Central Elementary at (308) 254-3642.
