SIDNEY, Neb. - Austin Hurt is no stranger to hard work.

Growing up on her family’s farm south of Sidney, the 14-year-old was raised with a deep appreciation for agriculture and animals—a passion that has shaped her young life.

About four years ago, Hurt discovered a love for horses during a difficult time in her life. Following the passing of her father, Andrew, in 2020, she turned to caring for horses, finding comfort and purpose in the bond they provided. Her affection for the animals is evident when she speaks about them, her eyes lighting up with enthusiasm.

This year, Hurt took her passion to the next level by joining rodeo. Competing in ribbon roping, barrel racing, pole bending and goat tying, she has found the sport to be both a challenge and a source of healing.

Balancing her rodeo commitments with school and farm responsibilities hasn’t been easy, but Hurt says the rewards far outweigh the struggles. Along the way, she’s built friendships with others who share her passion, though she admits the journey has also meant losing some connections.

For Hurt, rodeo is more than a pastime—it’s a way to heal, find joy, and share her love for horses. She hopes to inspire other young people to join the rodeo and discover the same fulfillment it has brought her.
